From: paul | posted: 30.06.2004 18:03 A year of successful running, but now the Roxio GoBack software (bundled with Norton Systemworks) returns an error, interrupting boot-up. Message states "Internal error gb_genlog (error code 154). I have read Symantec's website and followed instructions but cannot break into the GoBack boot menu to disable it. My undying gratitude to anyone who can help me out. |

From: Vic | posted: 01.07.2004 20:18 I had the same problem a week ago when I tried to uninstall GoBack following problems in booting - it could take up to five reboots to access windows. I followed Symantec's advice on the website but still GoBack failed to disable or uninstall. Even a 50 minute session with a Symantec technician failed to resolve the problem. I could not even re-install, repair or recover Windows XP. Symantec's final suggestion was to reformat the hard disk, re-install and update Windows XP and programs, which as a last resort solved the problem. However, before resorting to this lengthy process first try a session with a Symantec technician on 020 7616 5813. Although it is stated to be a fee-based service in the manual, the service would appear to be free as I have used it on a number of occasions (twice with GoBack problems). Good luck. |

From: Andy | posted: 31.01.2005 08:49 I have owned/built PCs for over 20 years and consider GOBACK to be the worst piece of software I have ever owned. I bought two copies of the software -- two machines -- and the 1st copy trashed my XP system the day I loaded it. The 2nd copy just ate my W2000 system. It's time to IN-SOURCE Norton's support. Kumar does not speak my kind of English to the level he can really offer much hope. His advice did not work! It takes 2-3 DAYS to rebuild my system plus the loss of data hidden deep in subdirectories that I can't find. I certainly wish this SNAFU did not exist! |

From: Harvey Phillips | posted: 14.04.2005 15:43 GoBack Problems Running XPpro sp2 on a Compaq EVO D300v. Installed GoBack. GoBack did not show after reboot though it showed in All Programs list and on task bar. After several reboots, still could never get the GoBack screen. Decided to uninstall via control panel and try again. Uninstall process would not complete. On reboot, computer froze. Could not get it going again. Tech Support said to reboot and reinstall....how with a dead computer? They explained how to add a special program to a basic Win98 boot disk. Still didn't work. After several days with Tech Support they passed the buck and suggested I return to the computer vender...What could the vender do and how much would that cost; probably more than the GoBack program. Finally had to use restore disk, reformat drive and reinstall all software (ever try to find all the original software disks and serial numbers and try to reload downloaded software and update versions of everything!?). But I'm a gluten for punishment. Decided to retry GoBack on a different Compaq computer, in fact two different Compaq computers. Same problem, frozen computers and all the hassle all over again * 2. Ouch! With much hesitation, I once more tried GoBack on a Dell computer. It worked beautifully. Anyone else have success with a Compaq computer? harveyphillips@yahoo.com |

From: Colin | posted: 01.05.2005 12:13 I have a Compaq Armada E500 and GoBack 3.0 Deluxe was working on it until I loaded XP SP2. The system worked fine with GoBack disabled (not the point of GoBack, really). However, recently I disabled Zonealarms logging functions (never really read them anyway) and GoBack now works again! However loading a spare copy (legal in everyway) onto a desktop I have (also with XP SP2) results in a continuous rebooting without ever getting near a Windows screen. GoBack is now disabled on that machine. Don't quite understand that one. I was going to upgrade to Symantecs 4.0 version but I have a friend whose had the same experience with that version. Think I'll wait until 5.0 |

From: I agree | posted: 10.05.2005 00:35 Yup, this program is complete sh*t. It trashed one of my customers pcs. I just spent 5 hours on this crap and its still not fixed. The fixes on the site didnt work for me either. Its basically stuck in a loop that wont let me disable it, wont restore to an older point, and wont let Win boot. Worst POS program ever. |

From: mike h | posted: 18.05.2005 22:38 just crashed my system too. spending hours and loads of money trying to recover data on the partitioned drives before i guess having to re-install complete system. GoBack should certainly GO BACK to the drawing board and not keep downloading it to us unsuspecting loyal users of their other programs. I feel used |

From: Keith | posted: 28.05.2005 14:56 My problem may be the same as that of some other people on this thread. I cannot boot my new XP notebook after installing GoBack. The usual start-up screen comes on for about two seconds, and then goes black with a winking cursor at top-left. Does anyone know how I can disable GoBack or remove it from the system? I cannot boot from a Norton SystemWorks CD, as I am told I must disable GoBack before doing that!!! The same thing applies to using the repair and reinstall disk that came with the computer. Best wishes, Keith |

From: Vicki | posted: 06.06.2005 09:01 Same here! I'm using Windows ME. Ever since I installed Norton Anti-virus 2005 and Norton GoBack a month ago, I've had nothing but trouble. Last month I received blue screens telling me While initializing device SYMTDI there was a windows protection error. System halted upon start up. I contacted Norton support (who was difficult to reach and forever in getting back to me) and their help was useless, not to mention showing a lack of interest. I tried uninstalling all Norton programs and they won't leave my PC, now matter how many different ways I've tried. I had to take it to a local tech who also had trouble with it. He reformatted the PC. Upon reinstalling Norton programs, the blue screen returned for him too. On the third attempt it finally 'seemed' to be ok, but after the third day I got it home I began getting the blue screen again. I got past it for a few days by using the Goback. On about the 5th time of going back it would finally open Windows. However, that no longer works now either. Yesterday I started receiving a message upon start up that GoBack had an internal error failure code gb_genlog. And another message that my system has crashed! I cannot get past it. Won't open windows. No way to remove it. It'll go back to the local tech tomorrow in hopes that I can at least get some info out of it onto disk. If he can't fix it cheaply enough, I'm off to buy a NEW PC, and I will NOT put any Norton program on a PC again! We spent money on a program that's suppose to help protect our pc's and ended up out MORE money because it trashed our PC's! The programs are GARB@GE! |
