From: Richard Williams | posted: 17.09.2006 18:15 I bought a copy of GoBack some years ago and found it worked smoothly, without any problems and allowed me to revert my machine on a number of occasions where crap software had trashed system files. Then Symantec adopted it and I used it again as a licensed product with their excellent Systemworks suite - again, no problems. I bought a new machine recently, lived without GoBack for a month, but after some problems with some software I was using decided to install GoBack. Then the problems started, not being able to get beyond initial boot up, etc. I disabled GoBack and was able to get into my machine again. Conclusion, sadly this product needs a radical overhaul by Symantec. I have uninstalled it from the machine and will have to rely on full drive backups to a portable hard drive until Symantec have sorted it out. |

From: Jennifer | posted: 20.09.2006 00:25 I am on the bandwagon with a classaction lawsuit myself. I renewed my subscription to Norton antivirus 2006 and with it get this great new program called Norton GOBACK wich is designed to safeguard my computer and be able to return it to its previous state should anything happen to it. Well, it crashed the hard drive and after 4 hours on the phone with dell I am told the only alternative is to buy a new harddrive. In tears I call Symantec who without question autmatically offer to refund the money for the two programs which seems fishy, so I aks have you had this problem before with this software? Well, sometimes it happens, but its because of the way you installed the software. I Filed a complaint with them today and get a call back from some idiot whose textbook response is I am sorry maam but other than a refund for the program we cannot reimburse you anything else. Now I find this website and if I knew how to go and find these people there would be some (several) acts of physical violence committed today. How are they getting away with this? I looked on their website today and it is currently still being advertised as one of their best products,...I dont get it? |

From: Josh | posted: 24.09.2006 19:28 Well, I think we all agree, symatec is absolute sh*t any way you look at it. Sh*t progs and Sh*t support. I repair pc's for a living and I always uninstall norton antivirus and install avast. Finds malware everytime that norton didn't and they have a free version. I now wish extreme bitch slaps to the people that designed goback. LoL ;) Anyway, wanted to share my fix for goback nightmares. Sometimes the boot cd provided by symantec works to take goback out of mbr, BUT if goback.bin is corrupted that won't work. Same with the gb_prog.exe /u fix or the ctrl. alt. g fix. Then when your really about to freak because you think of all the data your gonna loose and all the time to reinstall windows and all the apps. and get everything configured just the way you like it. AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Try to slave the drive into another pc but you can't access the drive because windows does not recognize the partition. Install goback on the pc hoping it will then recognice the drive, but oh, you "fixed the mbr and goback is not gonna have that. So your left with a drive that is completely inaccessable by any recovery prog. WELL HERE IS THE FINAL FIX!!!! Google ptedit.exe and download. (free) create bootable floppy and copy ptedit onto disk. Boot to floppy and run ptedit. CHANGE DISK IDENTIFIER TO 07 . Goback changes disk identifier to 44 (raw). 07 (ntfs) will allow the disk to become accessable when slaved if you can't boot it. My pc booted right up after hours of trying everything else. Hope this helps someone. Remember boys and girls, symantec is over priced crap. Rollback rx seems to be a great replacement for goback. |

From: KSI | posted: 28.09.2006 19:08 To add an oil into the flame. I have a new kind of problem with GoBack 4.1 now. Seamingly, all of the Symantec and Norton (That I got with Norton Works 2006) was removed form my computer, including this boot stage. Now, when I right-click some files in Windows Explorer, Norton GoBack 4.1 icon pops up and tryes to instal the thing. After pressing Cancel several times I get to regular pop-up window. What am I missing? Please, advise. |

From: Assi | posted: 04.10.2006 22:59 Hi KSI, As you have mentioned that you have uninstalled all the Norton programs from Windows, but you still see the GoBack trying to configure itself. Such issue may occur if GoBack is not removed completely from Windows. Check GoBack entries in the Windows services and startup, if you find GoBack services running in then disable or stop it, remove GoBack from Windows startup. 1. Click Start> Run. 2. Type the following and click OK: msconfig 3. On the 'System Configuration Utility' window, click on "Services" tab. 4. Look for the following service and if it is enabled, un-check the box next to them: Goback Polling Service 5. Click on Startup tab. 6. Un-check the box for 'Norton GoBack'. 7. Click Apply. Click OK. 10. When prompted for restarting your computer, restart your computer. You can also use the MSI Cleanup utility from Microsoft to remove the any the entry of Norton or Symantec from the Windows Installer configuration information. For more details on MSI Cleanup utility, refer the online document from Microsoft KB. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/en-us Regards, Assi |

From: KSI | posted: 06.10.2006 18:37 Thanks, Assi. Items 1-10 were in place by the time I had this problem. Before I got your advice I took some risk and cleaned registry from traces of GoBack that were under the installer key. After that the problem disappeared. I decided, still, to run this MSI cleanup utility. During installation it actually asked for permission to remove some traces of GoBack (means, I have not cleaned it 100%). Once it was installed, there was no GoBack on the list any more. Thanks for the reference again. KSI |

From: Foley | posted: 13.10.2006 00:03 The worst program ever in the annals of PC dom? The award goes to Norton Go Back (Back to where???). This program totally and utterly effed up my laptop hard drive (which is only 8 weeks old). After trying practically everything (well, i was shut out of my laptop and so i put the hard drive in a hard drive case/enclosure and connected it via USB to my desktop). At this point the hard drive came up in my desktop pc but was not accessible!! I had been in contact with my laptop suppliers technical team (pc world) and they were USELESS, and symantec technical support : not only USELESS, but also hard to understand and ROBOTIC sounding (i honestly do think their call centre is in India - i did call them quite a few times!!), then (THIS IS THE SOLUTION THAT WORKED AFTER 2 WEEKS OF STRESS, aggro and hindsight). i got the latest edition of Windows XP magazine (October 2006 issue 64) which advertises recover from any pc crash, and there was a program on the CD that actually worked!! its called stellar something! i'll check and come and tell you all tomorrow but it got all my files back for me |
