From: Chris | posted: 29.11.2006 14:35 Wish I had found this web site a long time ago, I lost 1.5 Terabyte of data thanks to Symantec GoBack 4.02 and their "We don't recognise this error". In the end I had to loose everything and start a fresh. Data gone and the new hard disks on my Supermicro X5DA8 Workstation turned to mush. After reading all your postings I am currently removing GoBack from all my other computers thanks to your advise and postings. Symantec is off my Christmas list from now on and will look for a different company to provide AV & Backup to my six computer network. |

From: jh | posted: 01.12.2006 17:15 I had trouble with GoBack a while a go. Could we have a few suggestions and reviews on a reliable replacement ? I have been using system restore and luckily have never needed to use it. The absence of GoBack is like a large black cloud hovering over my head and is stopping me from taking the interesting risks I used to take. |

From: LWC | posted: 10.12.2006 05:25 Thanks to all for this thread. Got a new computer for my wife, and things were going along fine until I installed GoBack. Suddenly, I was looking at the black screen with the MBR error. Had no clue what to do. Fortunately, my computer was working and I googled 'MBR error' and GoBack, and found this thread. Shutting off the power in back did no good. Ctl-Alt-G did no good. However, the second time I tried Ctl-Alt-G and then 'F', I was able to start up in safe mode. Unfortunately, safe mode would not let me uninstall GoBack, but safe mode did let me go into System Restore, and System Restore worked. It put GoBack in a file folder for me, and I promptly deleted it. So, thank you all very very very much. You know what they say...Happy wife, happy life. MBR error, unhappy wife...you get the picture. |

From: RetroSpect BEATS GoBACK | posted: 12.12.2006 03:57 For many years -- I have installed Roxio's Go-Back 3.0 on quite a few machines. Mostly brand new machines, fresh installs, no programs loaded. Sometimes it worked great, other times blue screen. Sometimes I recover it, sometimes it was a complete rebuild. All the problems started with WinXP SP2. I have go-back working sucessfully on several WinXP SP2 machines. IT WORKS GREAT! (Once it's installed). IT IS THE WORST, if you have not installed it yet. My advice... Don't try it if you have SP2 or later. It's not worth trashing your system. I LOVE Goback, but the risk is too great to get it on your system. THE SOLUTION.... Try RETROSPECT by EMC !! It does the same thing as GOBACK, but the goback info is stored on another hard-drive so your computer is even further protected. External hard drives are super cheap now. Or, if on a network, you can use RetroSpect to backup to another PC's hard-drive. Love it, and have and ZERO problems. |

From: itguy | posted: 25.12.2006 23:37 We had the same problem and no luck with the Symantec website. The CNTRL-ALT-G saved the day. This after trying the bootable CD and option 1 about a dozen times with no luck. Thanks to all who published the CNTRL-ALT-G work around. We would be reloading by now if we had not stumbled across this. |

From: jslater | posted: 03.01.2007 18:40 Thanks all who posted about the Ctrl-Alt-G solution I had been working with this issue for an entire day and was perplexed by the lack of info on Symantec's site. I actually am now 90 minutes into waiting for a live chat tech that was approximated to take 15 minutes. Thanks again...McAffee here I come. |
