From: Toby Betenson | posted: 09.10.2000 16:10 Hi, I've heard about ISDN's and how quick they are and was wondering if they're really as good as some people say. I'd only use one for browsing the internet and playing internet games(I don't need fax or anything). Does anyone know which one imparticular is good? Or if I should get one at all?!? I can only spend under or around £100 and would prefer not to have to open up my computer to install it. Do I need any special adaptors or anything? All info wanted. Toby Betenson |

From: Alex Cruickshank | posted: 10.10.2000 08:49 For a start, you'd need some sort of ISDN connection to your house - a normal phone line won't do. This alone is likely to cost more than £100, with line rental costs on top, so for now you're probably better off sticking with a 56K modem. The speed difference with ISDN is noticeable (up to twice as fast if you're lucky), but not stunning. |

From: keir | posted: 10.10.2000 10:24 ADSL is what you want. This runs from a standard phone socket. BT and a few other companies are currently trailling this new system -- see www.btopenworld.com. It's not going to be perfect and is littered with technical problems - you have to live in a catchment area, for example, which currently means a major city. And ADSL gets popular then the available bandwidth may drop to that of a modem (or lower). |
