From: steve | posted: 26.07.2004 22:22 I have just purchased an FS2710 from e-bay and it has no CDRom. I have downloaded the appropriate driver from the Canon website and it appears to have installed correctly, however when trying to use the program I get a 'canocraft fs alert that says... 'OSU: no configured device found. Please run configuration utility. Error Code 0x140e0091' Now I dont know where this utility is, but when I loaded the program I was told thet the sysem had configured succesfully, albeit with a warning that it hadn't just before completion. Any ideas out there. All help greatfully received Steve |

From: steve | posted: 11.10.2004 17:34 Hi, thanks for the responses. I just got back off holiday so only got them today. Yes I do use XP pro but I got the driver from Canon UK's site and also spoke to them and went through the whole setup over the phone to their instructions and still no joy. I shall try the Australian site as I have read about people using that with success. I will also check out that link too. Thanks Steve |

From: Peter | posted: 12.05.2005 03:34 Hi, yes I have no hair left on my head over this one, But.... thanks to the advice from MLang this does work, just have to buy a usb-scsi adaptec adapter and the vuescan software off the web. Thanks MLang. Installing CanoScan FS2710 on Windows XP Keywords: problems; errors; scanner not detected; CanoScan FS2710; Windows XP; USB; SCSI; Adaptec USB2XChange; ASPI; Canon IX-27025E SCSI Scanner Device; FS4000US; Vuescan 1. Make sure that you have a recent version of ASPI. I downloaded aspi_471a2.exe (511kb) from Adaptec's Web site. This is a self-extracting zip file; when it extracts, see the README.TXT file (under folder C:\adaptec\aspi) for installation instructions. You can run the aspichk.exe utility to ensure it is properly installed (may require reboot) 2. Purchase a USB-SCSI adapter. I used Adaptec USB2XChange (available from dabs.com, or directly from adaptec.com. Plug the Adaptec USB2XChange adapter into a USB port on your machine, as opposed to a port on a USB hub device. I found that when I plugged it into the hub device, it was not recognised, even though the hub is self-powered. 3. When the New Hardware wizard appears, install the drivers for Adaptec USB2XChange from the installation CD. * You may need to download Windows XP drivers from Adaptec Web site. The file name is usb2xchg_win_drv_v200.exe (123Kb). The Windows 2000 drivers work for Windows XP. * The USB2XChange adapter may not be recognised unless the scanner is first powered on. When properly installed, your adapter will be listed under Device Manager / USB controllers as "Adaptec USB2-Xchange Adapter". 4. Now, you ALSO need to get the system to recognise your CanoScan FS2710. You should find that it is being picked up by the New Hardware wizard as a device called “Canon IX-27025E SCSI Scanner Device". I looked for help on this on the Web and found recommendations such as using UMAX 2200 or Adaptec AVA-2904 drivers. I looked in vain for these, and tried a few others, none of which worked. I then realised that the successor to the FS2710 (the FS4000US) is a USB-powered device, so I decided to download the drivers for it and give them a try. You can get this driver from software.canon.com. The file is called s2301enx.exe (685Kb), a self-extracting ZIP. I unpacked the contents to C:\TEMP and then edited the file Fs40us.inf in Notepad. Under the section labeled "[Models]", insert the line: %SCSI\Banff.DeviceDesc%=SCSI\BanffInstall,CANON___IX-27025E_______1 5. Now, go back to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and do the following: * Go down to the device listed as "Canon IX-27025E SCSI Scanner Device" * Right-click and select "Update Driver" * When the Hardware Update wizard appears, select "No, not this time" [Next>], "Install from list or specific location" [Next>], "Don't search" [Next>], Imaging Devices - Have Disk ..., browse to C:\TEMP (where I had unpacked the drivers), and off you go. When installed, your scanner will be listed under Device Manager / Imaging devices as "CanoScan FS4000US(SCSI)". You will also see it under Control Panel - Scanner and Cameras, where there is a diagnostic facility to test if the scanner is working. 6. I tried installing CanoCraft v3.6 but this does not recognise the scanner. Photoshop does not recognise it either. However, if you install Vuescan (available from www.hamrick.com) your scanner will be recognised as the "FS2710". The Vuescan software is reportedly much better than Canon's own software. I have not used it often enough to comment, but on a straight comparison of a 35mm slide scanned with CanoCraft and Vuescan, the Vuescan version had much better tones and sharpness. I came upon this solution by looking at the Web, trying the solutions that others had proposed (none of which fully worked), and trial and error. I started this a few months ago, then abandoned it until I got a new photo printer this week and decided to give it a go again. As such, I did not do things in the neat order as prescribed above. In between, I installed and uninstalled a lot of drivers before I chanced upon this solution. Anyway, I hope it will be of use to somebody. I had been considering selling my FS2710 scanner, but had a look on eBay and saw that they were going for nothing. The above solution works for me - I provide it in the hope that it will be of use to others, but on the strict understanding that no warranties or liabilities attach should it go somehow wrong. OK, good luck with it - must get back to archiving my slides! |

From: Dick Endecott | posted: 03.06.2005 23:04 Hi fellow FS-2710 sufferers, I found a similar solution but mine was cheaper and simpler and may encourage more owners to try again. Firstly, you do need to download the ASPI package from Adaptec and install it on Win XP. Make sure you run it as explained in the readme file. Secondly, you may find you need to download the XP version of the Canon software. I'm not sure about this because It isn't used but I had downloaded it before I found it didn't work. The US canon site doesn't offer better than a Win 2000 upgrade but the Canadian, Australian and UK sites have an XP version that is only half the file size because it isn't multi-language. Thirdly, (this is the painful bit) you have to download the VueScan application but the pain is eased a bit because it's a try-before-you-buy offer and you can be sure it works before parting with your money (50 dollars US). In my experiments I tried another Adaptec SCSI card in case the Canon card was the culprit. This cost me only 5 GBP in the local market (Wimborne, Dorset) and I found that the scanner runs at least 3 times the speed at the highest resolution so it was a good deal at the price and a lot less expensive than a SCSI/USB converter. However if speed is not an important factor the canon card is OK. The VueScan software seems to be very good - at least as good as the original Canon software and I have only one criticism. It doesn't install itself in the Aquire slot of the File menu on any application. However it does open your default photo editor after you have scanned an image. VueScan finds all your scanners (including USB) so you don't need to learn different ways of working for different scanners. I now use the original Canon SCSI card on an old computer with an older HP 5P flatbed scanner with the latest software and it is as good as new (when 300 dpi was high resolution). If this is too over-simplified for anyone out there, email me at dickendecott@supanet.com - No guarantee but will try to help until snowed under. Best of luck, DE. |

From: SDavis | posted: 08.06.2005 02:16 MLang, thanks so much for the info. Is there any way to get the scanner to show up in Photoshop? I would really prefer to scan through Photoshop rather than use Vuescan. |
