From: Also looking at tecras. | posted: 17.10.2000 20:56 The tecra 8100 normally comes in two variants. Look at the www.toshiba.co.uk web site, (more informative than the marketing mad but info challenged .com). You will see that you have the choice of Win58/98 or NT/W2k. The win98 is actually a cheaper 8100 in the shops - they are considered different models. So in a nutshell - it obviously takes Win98! |

From: johanna | posted: 10.03.2005 16:23 Dear David M, I am thinking of installing Windows XP on my Tecra 8100 that now runs Win98SE, but am not sure if I also need other drivers for sound, screen etc. , and if so, how many, and where to find them. How did you install WinXP ? Thank you for any help. |

From: Jimmy Keng | posted: 09.11.2006 14:54 I just got one of these 8100 laptops. I've installed XP on it fine - it was pretty straightforward. XP seems to have all the necessary drivers for this laptop, so everything was recognised and installed. I decided to upgrade the 64Mb that was on it and tried a 256Mb PC133 Sodimm. It did NOT work! The laptop seems to only like PC100 ram, so you've been warned. I also got brand new third party battery for around £20 on ebay. 256Mb PC100 Sodimm is about £25. The USB port is 1.0 afaik but with the two PCMCIA slots, you can easily get a card with 4 x USB 2.0 ports. I've also got it wifi'ed by plugging a USB dongle to it. Good little laptop that can cope with today's modern technology - still can be used 7 years after it was made. It's perfect for web browsing, email, word process etc.. If you are on a budget can get one for around £50-£80, go for it. Upgrading it won't cost you more than £50 |

From: Rosie | posted: 16.01.2007 21:26 I have an 8100 which I installed XP home on with no problem apart from it then failing to allow the second memory slot to work! It has 2 slots with 128 in each both of which work in the first slot. I get a pci.sys error, I have tried the solutions given by microsoft to no avail and I haven't found 256 memory as cheap as £25 otherwise I would be happy to stick with this laptop. As it is the memory problem makes it too slow. Hope this helps |
