From: In a towering rage | posted: 30.10.2006 12:21 I want to throw my philips hdd070 against a wall, and then boil it, and then run over it with a car. Took 6 hours to upload my music files onto the device, the software freezes my computer. The updated software does not recognise the device. It freezes. I initially thought that this was because it was bought overseas, but from looking at this forum I now believe that it is a problem with the overall design of the product. The best solution to this problem is to buy a different product - something that is known to work. |

From: matt_vo | posted: 20.11.2006 18:18 Hi all, I had the same problem as most of you, flickering screen, not recognized by MusicMatch, not booting up,... It was dead. But then I read someone had opened his up and tried fixing it. And I did just that. I opened-up the player using a small Phillips (star shaped) screwdriver, unhooked the hard disk and opened it (this involves bending some thin metal pins all along the sides of the hard disk casing, a really simple task if using a small tool, like a small precision flat screwdriver). There are three screws on top of the hd, but you don't need the remove those! With those pins pushed aside, you can now pry open the hard disk and, low and behold, the glistening hard disk platter and arm. I presume most problems with these players is their faulty hard drive (mainly a stuck arm). And mine was just that. All I did was push the arm gently to free it up. A now it works fine! But for how long? You can even plug the hard drive back in, turn on the player and see the platter spinning and arm moving. Really neat! Just remember to keep the platter ultra clean. Anyways, maybe this can help others out. |

From: TP | posted: 04.12.2006 10:33 Regarding matt_vo guide to opening the hard drive, If you are very lucky this will work but it is almost a sure fire way to kill the hard drive completely. You should not attempt this if your player is still under warranty and only try this as a last resort. Before opening the Hard drive just try giving it a vary hard quick knock on the side, make sure you hit the side and have the hard drive on its side when you do this, if it does not work try hitting another side, once you have tried all the sides and it fails to work you can try matt_vo guide. If you do open the drive DO NOT TOUCH THE PLATTER, the round shiny disk this will KILL the hard drive!!! Any dust can kill the hard drive so make sure you wash your hands to get rid if any grease, dust and dirt. Clean a large surface area and wear a dust protection face mask available from any DIY store so you don't sneeze, breath or cough over the platter. once you have done this carry on at your own risk - carefully remove any covers and gently move the arm until it is free, it should move very smoothly and freely, put it back together before switching on and don't play with it when it is opened. For those who do attempt to do this good luck! and please let everyone know if I worked or not. |

From: Rick | posted: 22.12.2006 20:10 Paul - you're a star ! Had the flickering screen, opened it up, unwrapped the battery and followed your instructions on soldering. And yes, its back working ! hurrah ! Don't be worried folks, pop next door and borrow the soldering iron off a neighbour (as I did) and its dead easy |

From: caz | posted: 19.01.2007 21:45 after updating firmware on my hdd070/05 it is now recognised as a philips 'Nike' player and tracks will no longer transfer from Musicmatch jukebox to the player. I have tried all the advice on philips website to no avail. I have also spent £'s on phone calls to philips customer care with no luck , they say its tough and are not willing to help although it was their firmware update that ruined it , I am going to chuck it in the bin and go and buy a creative zen and vow never to buy any philips products ever again !! |

From: Will Glyn | posted: 19.02.2007 20:55 I too have a HDD1620/05. My problem is slightly different as my device is not detected by windows at all. Not in device manager or anywhere else. When I plug the player in absolutely nothing happens. I have tried it on other computers, with WMP 10 and 11. I am a computer technitian and have tried a number of tools to open up the player to no avail! I have contacted philips and got nowhere. It is difficult to tell whether anything different is happening when the player is plugged into the computer, as even when its not plugged into the USB or the mains, it turns on anyway. I hate the bloody thing now. I've just purchased a Creative Zen and the philips will go in the bin, after I've stamped on it a few times. For 4 months I have listened to the same music. It has 6gb, and I've only used 400mb so its torture. Shame as I've always been a philips fan. |
