From: David | posted: 06.12.2000 19:59 I am looking to purchase a soundcard for use with a midi keyboard with a view to playing real time synth stuff. As I understand many sound cards including the SB Live Platinum have very high latencies. (Which means that you will press the keys on the keyboard and then about 0.5 seconds later the sound will emerge from the computer. Does anyone have any latency information that could help me decide on a soundcard to purchase, as the manufacturers dont seem to publish this information? Also does anyone know of any good soundcards for realtime midi use? Regards David |

From: keir | posted: 11.12.2000 14:03 The trouble comes from certain cards which favour software synthesis instead of on-board chip synthesis. I have the Sound Blaster Live! card at home and it's fine without any latency. Before that I had a terrible cheapo £10 card which used software synthesis, although neglected to point this out on the box. With this I found that I did get a second or two delay after pressing a key although only with wave sounds - FM synthesis was instantaneous (because it was on board). So in other words, price is all important. I couldn't vouch for the card you have but the cheap(ish) Sound Blaster Live! has no latency. |
