From: Rob Greenwood | posted: 14.10.2005 16:59 This so-called review is abysmal. I own one of these phones and have just happened to be browsing and thought I'd take a read. ITreviews hasn't even bothered to get it's hands dirty with this phone, otherwise it would surely have mentioned that: 1) The camera (or rather the Symbian camera software) is utter garbage, and the cameras nearly useless in anything other than bright light 2) Handwriting recognition is available but unlike the SE P800 it's so cumbersomely implemented that users will likely stick to the keyboard 3) This is a multimedia powerhouse of a phone, with stereo SPEAKERS, and is capable of playing practically all worthwhile digital music filetypes, and is damn good at showing video too. The supplied headset gives good quality sound although the earpiece design needs radically rethinking. 4) Superb PC syncing and contact management. 5) This phone uses TRANSFLASH cards which aren't the same as mini-SD. They can be put into an SD card adapter for reading via card reader. The max size in the UK at the mo appears to be 256MB, and is dirt cheap e.g. 6) If the internal memory gets full (too many texts etc) it will crash badly and completely wipe itself. Woe betide those who don't clear down. 7) I had a bad screen failure where, no matter where I pressed on the screen, only the top 5mm of the screen registered the press. This rendered the phone nearly unusable for anything but making calls from the phonebook. It had to be repaired, but hasn't failed since. 8) It's tough, I dropped it several times onto concrete from waist height (heavy and slippery design contributed to my drops) and it's still going strong, even with a few scratches to the screen. ...And I can't be bothered to go on. Suffice to say that on the strength of this review, ITReviews demonstrates that it's seriously lacking any serious insight into this product. I suspect the site's little more than rehash of someone else's words (probably the motorola marketing team). |

From: Leo Waldock | posted: 14.10.2005 18:19 I wrote this review so feel it is proper to reply to Rob Greenwood's posting: 1) "The camera is utter garbage." I didn't praise or rubbish the camera as I found it to be typical of its type. 2) "Handwriting recognition is available". Reviews are tight for space which is why I talked about the virtual keyboard which is likely to be the typical method of text entry. 3) "it's a multimedia powerhouse". I believe I said that. 4) "Superb PC syncing" I don't recall the last time I used a phone that didn't sync correctly, although some Bluetooth-only models are a pain. A phone should sync painlessly - if not it deserves to be criticised. 5) The memory card is indeed TransFlash. My error. 6) "If the internal memory is filled the phone crashes". Interesting and worrying but I didn't fill the memory with my phone book. 7) Bad screen failure which has now been fixed - could this be related to point 8? 8) You dropped your phone repeatedly onto concrete due to its large size and weight. I didn't drop the review sample and wouldn't consider it a legitimate test but I did mention the size and weight. I thought the overall tone of the review was balanced and slightly unfriendly and my conclusion (which I reproduce below) chimes completely with Rob Greenwood's views so I'm not really sure that there are serious disagreements here. "The Motorola A1000 is a fast, well specified PDA phone and the enormous screen is very impressive indeed. The screen also dictates whether this phone will be any good to you as it makes the phone big and heavy, so if you want to make video calls and movie clips then you should head for a 3 shop, and rapidly. On the other hand if you only make voice calls and send SMS then it's not worth the bother." |

From: Alex Cruickshank | posted: 14.10.2005 18:40 As Editor of this site, I'd make the point that journalists don't generally get much time to review new equipment; typically only a few days before the item is collected by the manufacturer or PR company and shipped to someone else. So this review, like pretty much all the reviews on this site and elsewhere on the Web (and in print magazines too), can only really cover first impressions, not problems that make themselves known only over the longer term, such as the memory problem you mention. That's why it's useful when people post their long-term experiences of products on this forum, as you have done. It all helps to inform other potential buyers. Regards, Alex |
