From: RC | posted: 07.12.2005 09:58 Hi, does anyone know anything about this laptop? I'm thinking about getting it but i can't find a single review anywhere. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/956042 |

From: zimmerman | posted: 09.12.2005 22:58 I like the look of it too but can't find a single review. Word of warning - I tried a display model in PC world and the touchpad was faulty. I persuaded the manager to get another out of stock and that had the same problem. The manager tried a third and THAT had the same problem - I sent an email to Philips (who don't seem to support the laptop on their website) and PC World but have had no reply |

From: Ahuramasda | posted: 10.12.2005 18:42 I found the same problem with the touchpad not working on the display model. Though thought that was a one-off problem until reading the posting. I bought one though and so far, no problems with the touchpad at all. The machine is great, exactly what I wanted in terms of size and spec, the performance is very good too, though obviously not up to the speed of a high-end desktop. I've got over over 3 hours use out of the battery, and it recharges fairly quickly too. I thought the price was excellent (I'd been looking at a Sony Vaio and a Samsung Q30). The only thing missing for me is on-board bluetooth, though I can live with that. The other thing that I have found is that it doesn't look as if its going to be easy to increase the amount of RAM. I assumed that the expansion slot would be under the base plate, as it is in my other laptop, but not so. So it looks like the whole casing will have to be removed to add another memory module. Overall I'm very happy with the machine and if you're interested, you could try one at the store to make sure your leaving with a good one!! Hope this helps... Ian |

From: Cris | posted: 11.12.2005 01:38 I have just got one these philips x50's. In fact we bought two, one had a couple of dead pixels on the screen but PC World did a swap and the one I have now is perfect. We wanted small, light and portable laptops that are stylish and would look good in business meetings. We initially went out to pc world to take a better look at the 12'' sony vaio, but at half the price we couldn't ignore this new laptop from Philips. Being product designers we know how philps tend to produce very stylish products. Having had this laptop now for 48hrs I am happy to say technically it seems good too. I didn't believe the 3 1/2 hours battery life quote, but so far so good, I have barely had to use its small white power adapter. I haven't bought a new laptop in a while so was surprised how well you could see the screen from all angles. All in all I am very pleased with our new pcs. Nice to have a laptop that feels truly portable (writing review sat on sofa - no leads - watching tv - cool), For 799, with this power, at this size, with this level of design, apple should be worried. |

From: Andy | posted: 13.12.2005 07:04 I just bought one of these machines too after my Packard Hell had finally died after 13 months of service. I like the small compact size and spec. Only real complaint is the wretched touchpad.. I can't disable the double-tap function which is a major headache. I reinstalled the HD with XP pro, and used a Synaptics driver (no X50 drivers are to be found on the internet). A great little machine, at a great price, but information & drivers for it are a clearly going to be a problem for a while yet. |

From: Bob from Glasgow | posted: 18.12.2005 21:25 PC World (Glasgow) demo X50 had a duff touchpad like the experience of the other participants. X50 has no built-in Bluetooth. What does one do to get Internet connection when there is no broadband or hot spot (e.g. Scottish islands)? With previous laptop (Sony Viaio), I used a plug-in bluetooth card to link to mobile phone. Thanks, Bob |

From: katie | posted: 28.12.2005 23:44 i have just bought the x50 and have found it excellent. The only problem is that the manual recommends a battery calibration during the first use and then every 3 months. You are supposed to press DEL during the startup screen. when i try to do this (at various stages of start up) nothing happens-it just turns on very quickly as normal. Any one else have this problem, or am i just missing something?i don't want to mess up the battery!!help!! |
