From: 12c | posted: 30.08.2006 21:36 in reply to #59 the large block is a rfi filter, it will do nothing to prrotect form a power surge but will reduce electrical noise entering and leaving the psu, you often find smaller versions of thee moulded onto monitor and other data leads on another note it is possible to access all the files on the recovery partition, most crucially the i386 and cd root files are there for building an xp home install cd to do this: start the recovery cd builder from the start menu, once loaded leave open but do not make the cd there will be a new drive appears in my computer which cannot be accessed with windows explorer browse to this drive with a 3rd party file manager (i used the file manager in 7zip) you can then copy any files you want out of there to a different partition it is also possible to delete all the folder.htt / autorun.inf / protect.ed files to unprotect the folders and make them acessible to windows explorer hope this is of some use 12c |

From: TrevorSP | posted: 02.09.2006 19:38 No one bought the all singing and dancing X54 yet from PC World et al..... Perfect, light, great screen, 2gbRAM 512mb Graphics, very fast 100gb hard drive and a even has built in bluetooth now!!! What doesn't it have, it comes with a highly doctored version of XP Media Centre, which doesn't matter if you can get hold of a set of XP MC disks, XPMCE comes on two CDs, as you can use your OEM number with no problems to do a clean install, ONCE YOU HAVE backed up all the drivers etc from the relevent drives. GREAT LAPTOP in every respect !!!! Regards, Trevor |

From: Adrian Matthews | posted: 06.09.2006 19:48 I don't understand the technicalities of multinationals, but Philips doesn't seem to be Philips any more but LG.Philips. The Freevents laptops are made by LG.Philips. So if you want any support you could try http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com. They don't seem to have a UK based website and I haven't tried them so whether you'll get the support you need I don't know. |

From: Katie | posted: 08.09.2006 14:26 PC World are now offering the Philips Freevents X51 at just £399 (although it is currently sold out)...does anybody know what the benefits of the X52/3 are? What would I need the Bluetooth for, and how useful is a coreduo processor for someone who is not a gamer and doesn't photoshop? And did anybody manage to resolve the screen flickering and touchpad issues? |

From: Adrian | posted: 13.09.2006 15:09 In response to Katie (#94), it seems to me that getting an X51 for £399 is a good bargain. I use a bluetooth USB "dongle" on my X51 (bought for £799 not so long ago!) so that it can communicate with my mobile phone, for transferring photos, etc. I've never had a problem with screen flicker - earlier responses on this notice-board suggested turning the brightness up. As for the sensitivity of the touchpad, the crucial thing when you buy your machine is to test the one you're actually buying in the shop (and not just the display model) to check that it hasn't got a funny touchpad - or anything else that would be less than hilarious when you got home. |

From: Dave | posted: 15.09.2006 10:41 Hay All! well i've just got the X54, its a beauty!! just 1 problem though, it says it comes with a 100gb hard drive but when u look at properties of C drive it says its capacity is 88.4?! i know there not usually exact so i wouldnt complain about a gig or two, but 12 seems excessive! anyone got any advice? thanks! |

From: cat | posted: 15.09.2006 23:54 I bought the X51. The first one had a fault with the power button which sucked but the replacement works perfectly and ive done all the things i normally do with a laptop (ie - the kind of things that break it) and it just wont break. Its fast, sleek, stylish and compact with is ideal for me becasue ill be communting alot with it. also wifi means complete convience. If you dont mind shelling out that £750 itll be worth ur while and to be honest there isnt much difference between t the X51 and X52 apart from a £50 price difference. |
