From: Pri | posted: 01.11.2006 17:00 Hi All - I'm planning on getting a Phillips X56, however can't get any info on it. The specs are amazing and you can get for sub £700. Bargain for a 1.85kg laptop? |

From: Martin M | posted: 06.11.2006 16:14 I had a look at the X56 laptop at PC World and was impressed by the look (bright screen not too shiny) and feel (keyboard felt solid with plently of travel on the keys which were of a good size). It also felt really light although it was displayed without the battery. The package including a laptop bag, memory stick, Skype phone and disks also looks good value (£749). However I would like games playing capability and wondered whether I would find the smaller text on the screen a bit too small. The Samsung Laptop, X11CV02, 1.83GHz with 14.1 Inch Display at John Lewis might be a good alternative. Weight: 2.1Kg but the price is higher £999. |

From: Nigel Reese | posted: 06.11.2006 18:48 I have just bought one of these because I could not believe what great value it seemed to be. Its not really a Philips machine but a Twinhead badged by DSG (Dixons- PC World etc). The screen is small but the quality is superb. The only drawback I can find so far is that it doesn't have a PCMCIA slot but the newer Express Card slot. I think that if you try to compare it with the equivalent Sony at £1600 you come away asking why anyone would pay the extra £900? |

From: Tim | posted: 07.11.2006 15:10 I bought an X56 for £699 from PC world, it's a great little machine, a quality keyboard and screen. Plenty of ports and onboard DVD burner. With a T5600 Core 2 Duo, 1Gig RAM and a 5600rpm 80 Gig HD I don't think you can get better. Build quality is good so it should stand up to the rigours of travel. I think it's biggest downside is it's battery life at only 3hrs 15mins with moderate use. Still at this price what do you expect, and as someone has already said, why pay £8-900 more for the sony equivalent. One thing that nearly all reviews seem to overlook when reviewing ultralights is the size and weight of the power pack. This one has a tiny power unit which is extremely light. This is another factor to consider when travelling. If this machine went wrong after it's one year warranty, I would just buy another and it would still be cheaper than a Sony. I think these machines are made by Averatec as this one has the same dimensions as the 2200 series, the main difference being the Intel processor over the AMD. Tim. |

From: Chris | posted: 07.11.2006 15:23 It is a good deal for a small laptop. While quite light it does feel a bit "plastic/breakable" which is my only concern with it. The screen is a bit small for gaming but that's the trade-off. |

From: Kevin | posted: 08.11.2006 23:44 I bought one of the Philips X56 laptops last week from PC World, seems an excellent laptop, fast, clear screen, good price (£699). My only disappointment is with the PC World promise that any Windows Vista PC or Laptop purchased will be entitled to a free upgrade on release. I asked at the store and they gave me a URL for the Microsoft site. When I visited the URL, it had a number of manufacturers listed but not Philips. There's also no mention on the PC World website of this promise of Vista, although it is well documented on several IT articles. So on the whole, excellent laptop... shame on PC World for making promises they don't keep. |
