From: ThunderBolt | posted: 03.12.2006 00:29 Thanks for the feed back fellas. It's a bit of an odd one this. I've noticed that the screen comes on from stand-by if I physically put the PC on stand-by through Start > Turn off > Stand-by. But not if it goes into stand-by on it's own (usually while I'm brewing up!). I'm sure a fix - maybe a firmware update - would be possible but where to get one is still a mystery as all Philips have to do with this PC seems to be the badge on the lid, Twinhead aren't listed as the maker so any update from them may well result in voiding the warranty. Last but not least... DSG aren't the most customer friendly of firms... At least not until 3 seconds after you hand your money over! |

From: Rick | posted: 03.12.2006 00:52 Cant get my x56 to boot just sits on XP boot screen for 5 minutes then reboots and so forth. Also cannot get to safe mode or DOS prompt. I didnot get any XP discs with the X56 just a WindowsXP shrinkwrap for media Centre no Discs. Anyone know if the images are on the X56's hard disk in a partition. Bought this from PCWorld. |

From: Kevin | posted: 03.12.2006 17:15 I purchased my X56 yesterday. Can anyone help before I go storming into PC World tomorrow? OK I'm a total dinosaur with anything technical but why 1. Do I lose anything that I minimize? 2. Is there a problem with my keyboard? - the hash key gives me a backslash, the inverted comma and AT keys each produce what the other should, pound sign key gives me hash, there are other discrepancies too and I seem to be totally unable to print the pound sign. Please tell me I'm not going mad and that this will be sorted/replaced tomorrow! @Thankyou@ |

From: Tim | posted: 03.12.2006 21:21 Does the x56 do dual display - ie, different displays on the internal screen and external monitor? |

From: j pollins | posted: 04.12.2006 05:45 Ben, I couldn't find AOL in add/remove software via control panel, so I just searched for all AOL files and deleted them. Is taking a chance but seems ok, and i need check that all the file names seemed to be related, ie, they clearly had AOL in them joe |

From: j pollins | posted: 04.12.2006 05:49 KB, I too contacted Partsmaster about a spare battery, since they apparently had the x56 built for them to sell in UK. Same experience as you, so I kept emailing them pointing out it's their machine. A team Leader said she would keep trying. I even gave her clues as to the x56's origins. If I get any news I'll let you known joe |

From: Bikebarbie | posted: 04.12.2006 17:20 I am in the same boat! Bought the laptop and cannot find anywhere on the net who can supply a battery!! Thinking about bringing the Laptop back what use has it got if I loose or damage the battery and will never be able to replace it! In store they told me that I can get it through their Postmaster website but is not listed, so they are selling under false pretences, very disappointed for such a lovely laptop they are all letting us down on such a little detail! |

From: Andy Burn | posted: 04.12.2006 23:09 Sorry guys Ive been awat for a few days. PCWorld (Aberdeen!) kept my paperwork, I presume for evidence. Ive had few problems with mine except its unable to burn some Datawrite discs at 16X and defaults to 4X. Im sure this will be corrected by a future firmware update (but I aint holding my breath) Suppose Ill have to use branded discs! Also, I use the lappy in a dual display mode with a 17in NEC, have uninstalled all the crap and made a ghost image of it! So far so good. I have no issues with shutdown/hibernate/sleep etc and even managed to get Gentoo linux dual booting (yay!) no luck with other mainstream distros yet (including various amd64 versions of Ubuntu), but Ill post if I do! I havent looked for a spare battery yet, Ill keep my eyes peeled too. Cheers, Andy |

From: KB | posted: 05.12.2006 10:32 No further feedback from Partmaster on battery but Twinhead dealer in Hong Kong can supply for around £50. Still waiting to hear if there is a UK/European supplier (Twinhead doesn't have a UK address but Netherlands importer listed on their site - there's an irony since Philips brand is Dutch!). If I can find battery supplier why can't DSG? - shameful! Local PC World yesterday had a new range of 4 variations on this machine (minor differences, up to 100Gb HDD) plus an even smaller (11.1" screen) model at over £900. I'd only seen the X53 before (slower processor, higher price!). X56 still the best buy if you can get a reasonable deal but no doubt they'll start offering reductions on others too once they've established the 'original' price to satisfy trading laws. |
