X56 looks great but is there any way the screen res can be fooled into being a 1280x1024 pixels. My app needs Directx 9.0b and says:- Intel integrated graphics controllers are not supported.

I am still annoyed with PC World Kingston - am fast losing respect for PC World as I follow the replies on this forum.
Am still chuffed with my x56 though. Does anyone know the difference betwen the X53 and X56? PC World is selling both? Last week the x53 was more than the x56 - this week it is slightly cheaper!

Could anyone tell me if this laptop comes with a Windows MCE backup disc?

I'm after one of these laptops but dont know if I should wait till after Xmas to buy it to see if the price comes down any more?

When I looked X53 had a slightly slower processor, otherwise I think it's pretty much the same machine. Several others in the range now on sale, at least one of which has a 100Gb HDD. Re pricing the fact is since DSG appear to have exclusive UK sales on these they can play with that monopoly, eg same thing at very different prices in different store brands (Dixons vs Currys vs Currys digital vs PC World vs web prices vs whatever you might 'negotiate' in store) without worrying about other retailers' prices. It should be said though that these machines do seem to be excellent value. If only DSG would support what they sell with parts and service!

Re the back up disc - I kept getting a prompt to make one when I got my laptop - I did do it after a few days - but by then had other stuff on my pc - is that going to be a problem does anyone know?

Im thinking of buying one of these laptops, but I wondered if anybody can give me any feedback on the screen. Im a photographer and need a bright, clear and accurate screen to correct my images on. I like this laptop because its very compact, but I need to know that the screen is good enough before I buy one.

Ive gotten Gentoo Linux running pretty much ok apart from the hibernate functions, cracked everything else pretty much - dri video, speed stepping, sound, wpa wireless etc etc :) It wasnt easy though, not for the feint of heart! lol!

sue, the backup discs (5 cd-roms) or 1 dvd will only copy original software to run the comp, nothing else. i had to use mine withina couple of days and it was ok. if it had copied all the other stuff i had download etc by then it would have saved a lot of time

Adam, I bought mine for photos too and it looks pretty good to me, but maybe do as I did and take some pics you know into PC World on an SD card and try it yourself. Computer Buyer (see below) rates the screen very highly.

Re the spare battery issue, I finally had (two) replies from DSG but they don't even understand the simple question!

Test in Feb Computer Buyer (my subscription copy arrived today). They rate X56 very highly except for gaming but they too don't seem to realise it's not sourced from Philips. I've written to suggest they investigate backup in such cases on behalf of their readers.

I brought the X56 from Currys for £645 the same price as there web site but you could buy it from prixmania for £619 which is also owned by the Curry, Dixion, PC World Group but sell cheaper to beat down the competition......... NOT A LOT PEOPLE KNOW THAT.... Check them out in Fulham or online
