From: Lee | posted: 30.12.2006 13:29 Vista runs perfectly on the Philips X56 with full Aero capabilities et al. One thing to note though is that my RAM is always above 50% so you may, as I am, want to consider buying extra RAM. Vista also comes with ReadyBoost which allows you to use USB Sticks as RAM. It must meet the following criteria: The capacity of the USB device must be at least 256 MB and no larger than 4 GB[3] The USB device must support USB 2.0 The device must be capable of 3.5 MB/s read speeds for 4 kB random reads spread uniformly across the entire device and 2.5 MB/s write speeds for 512 kB random writes spread uniformly across the device. The device must have at least 64 MB of free space I can't give any more information on this though - I use memory cards not sticks and to my knowledge doesn't work. If you have any more questions, just ask. Lee |

For any of you who have changed the homepage the direct link is below. Whether it is a useful link remains to be seen, but fingers crossed! http://www.thetechguys.com/vistaupgrade/windowsvistaupgrade.aspx Happy New Year all!!! |

From: Chris | posted: 31.12.2006 12:13 Les, I got the 2GB SoDIMM from Crucial www.crucial.com/uk the spec - 2GB 200-pin 256Mx64 DDR2 PC2-4200 The 4200 is important as it's the same as the 1GB. You can get slightly faster memory but this can actually decrease performance if the system isn't optimised for it. PC World told me they hadn't tested the system with 2GB but I've had no problems so far and it made a difference to the speed of the machine, although it wasn't exactly slow to begin with. The only other thing you need to know is that it's bleeding expensive - about £500! I was very lucky and got mine through work. |

From: Lee | posted: 01.01.2007 14:32 Just to add to my report on Vista, the hibernate issue is not an issue with the laptop itself, but with Windows XP as Vista hibernates perfectly. Vista also comes with a Sleep function which combines Standby and Hibernate, which works perfectly too. |

From: James | posted: 01.01.2007 20:56 Im currently running Vista RC1 on my X56 and it runs really well. It is capable of utilising the new flip 3D and glass UI. Performance is pretty good for such demanding OS, can't recommend this laptop any more. BUY ONE!!!! |

From: MJ | posted: 02.01.2007 01:46 I've had the X56 for 6 days but tried to turn it on this evening and it is refusing to cooperate. So infuriating! The green battery light is on so there is power getting to it but the power button isn't working. Has anybody else had this problem? |

From: James | posted: 03.01.2007 09:00 I am currently experiencing the same problem on a Philips X56. The power button does nothing but as you say when the power is applied the green led lights up. I have removed the battery and tried starting it just on mains power but there is no difference. I have had a look through the supplied manual but there is no mention of anything to try in the case of the laptop not starting. There is however a reset point mentioned but I can't find it anywhere (not that it would definitely fix the problem anyway!) |
