From: victoria | posted: 03.01.2007 09:23 Hi Lee, Thanks for the vista and RAM update - that's great. I was just wondering if I could be really cheeky and ask you to scan the Philips x56 with the system scanner provided by CRUCIAL memory, just so I can see if its possible to to upgrade the RAM internally and check how many free slots. To be honest, I'm a computer novice, but this seems to explain things really simply, and even tells you exactly what memory part - make and model to buy! http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CP79xrHzw4kCFQwtEAod7GhVNA Thanks ever so much ! |

From: Rico | posted: 03.01.2007 13:14 Chris Did you buy 2 gigs of extra memory from Crucial? If so was it installed alongside (to end up with 3gigs of ram) what was already installed or in place of? I ask because it appears there are 3 empty slots in my X56 with the standard gig of ram in place. I was about to open up the back to se what type of memory it actually uses. I would presume you'd add exta to what is alredy there? Like I say I've not got my screwdriver out yet. Looking at Crucial there appeas to be 1 gig of the ram you mention for £69-99+vat? http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listmodule.asp?family=DDRII&tabid=DDR2+PC2%2D4200 bottom of page for 200pin ram. Would that install to run alongside what is already in? Cheers. |

From: Rico | posted: 03.01.2007 13:33 Chris Slipped the back plate off - is there actually three empty slots in there? Without fiddling about too much in there and bearing in mind mine is as yet less than a week old, I couldn't see the 'empty' slots?? What was your experiance in there?? Many thanks ~~ Rico |

From: r0ssc0 | posted: 03.01.2007 14:51 Hi, There aint much tak on here about what kind of graphics or games it can run? Will the PHILIPS X56 be able to run World of warcraft at an acceptable level? I dont know much about this 224MB Intel GMA950 integrated graphics so feedback would be welcome :) thanks |

From: John | posted: 03.01.2007 20:13 Hi. I've opened up the laptop and there is only 1 SO-DIMM slot for memory. To upgrade to 2GB you'd need to ditch the 1GB stick you currently have and shell out the £400 for a single 2GB SO-DIMM Also, contrary to the advertised specs, the chipset is 945GM, not the later 950 chipsets in the X53 etc. Vista does run fine though, no hibernation issues, and aero glass looks superb. |

From: vicky | posted: 04.01.2007 09:29 Rico - Check this out : http://www.crucial.com/index.asp It's the system scanner from crucial - if you scan the x56 it will tell you how many slots there are on your specific machine and tell you exactly what memory you can use to upgrade it - including make model and price from their web site ! I would be grateful if you would do this - to check it all out before I buy one !! I hope this helps, Thanks in advance Vicky |

From: Rico | posted: 04.01.2007 11:23 John I'm wondering if there are three more empty slot behind the OEM sticker on back of laptop? I've taken the small cover off and could only see the occupied slot. Maybe as I read elsewhere as per similar Freevents/Twinhead units you need to take the back off completely? and Vicky..... Because both the Crucial upgrade advisor and CPU-Z-133 both report 4 slots with 1 occupied??? http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php Two gig ram chips are currently very expensive and don't feel like ditching the ram already in. I think I need to take the whole back off and report back later but currently some swine has stolen my small 'Philips' screwdriver :( To replace the existing ram with a 2 gig module is going to be expensive currently Vicky. The 2 gig chip to fit the X56 at Crucial is here http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.Asp?IMODULE=CT25664AC53E but compare it to the 1 gig chip http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.Asp?IMODULE=CT12864AC53E I don't suppose there would be much point asking at my local PC World upgrade centre either LOL?? As to the X56 then go buy one Vicky. It runs very well with the supplied gig of ram. Runs windows apps including Photoshop CS2 very well. Currently I'm very pleased with mine even though I had to buy the display model at PC World for a small discount. PC World chap wasn't too sure if they would be getting any more X56's in (at York) and thought it was being replaced by X55 ..... though don't read anything into that as it appeared to be £100 more!! The 'free' upgrade to Vista Home Premium when it arrives should run fine on current configuration. Link to apply for Vista upgrade was posted earlier in this forum but be warned they will still want credit card for post and packing!! Very nice laptop for the money. Currently flying off the shelves :)) Anyway - I'll report back should I get further info on the memory slots available |
