From: Rico | posted: 12.01.2007 10:06 Bobby - I'd be very careful changing OS on this machine. In the main Windows Media Edition isn't that bad. What you have to bear in mind is that you'll need some way of installing SATA drivers (as hard disk is sata). Maybe some form of USB floppy drive may be required. Bios isn't overly configurable and not much help when things go wrong - as I know when mine went wrong. Whatever - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MADE THE CD/DVD DISK BACKUP as nagged upon first use! jonathanmusto - from what I gather it'll be an upgrade. DesF - No, X56 has a single 1024 module fitted in a single slot. Currently an upgrade for that machine to 2gig will be very expensive! Of course there will be the oppertunity to use removable media as memory with Vista possibly? Marc - you can through the Intel setup instruct it to let windows look after wireless connection which may get rid of the intel wireless icon? I upgraded the intel drivers and never had another 'drop' at home but unfortunately my X56 lasted another 2 days :(( May be that your wireless adapter has packed up if you can't receive a signal anywhere? Got to admit I liked the X56 though wasn't overly confident it's build quality was such that it would last a reasonable time. This was all too soon born out. As mine was less than 10 days old I took a refund. |

From: Richard | posted: 12.01.2007 19:43 I didn't get a redemption form when purchasing my X56 form Curry's. But on the moduslink upgrade site I said NO when it asked for a redemption form. When it asks for your computer reseller it's the second one down on the list (Advent/ Ei Systems/ Philips F). Then follow the instructions then to finish the upgrade but to warn you have to pay a small fee to have the upgrade £16.10 that's Vista, P&P and VAT. |

From: Dave Adamson | posted: 12.01.2007 20:15 I've convinced myself that the CPU in the X55 (and probably the X56) is socketed. Does anyone know if it actually is? (As opposed to surface mounted, which would make it non-upgradeable) |

From: Neil | posted: 13.01.2007 14:44 Has anyone has any problems with the paint coming off the touch pad? i have an x55 and after only 3 weeks the touch pad has an area that is completey white. it looks a mess and after returning it to the store they said there is nothing wrong with it at all. it seems not a very good quality finish. |

From: Miriam | posted: 13.01.2007 23:56 Hi, no the X56 does not come with a recovery disk you need to make your own when you are prompted to do so or by going in your programs then system recovery. Keep the disk safe as you will only have 1 chance to make a recovery disk. I m not sure about Vista as I am not interested yet, I ll wait a few reviews first. I have a question of my own which I hope someone can aswer : I tried to copy a DVD and the x56 alerted me that it could not be copied because of copyrights. I am sure there is a program that you can download that will over-ride this. Can anyone help pleaseeeee. Thanks |

From: Kevin | posted: 14.01.2007 22:08 Hi, I've had my X56 for over 2 months now and it is a lovely little laptop. I have a number of small complaints tho: 1. I have a big white area on my touchpad where the paint has come off (I only use the laptop about 24 hours a week, so in 8 weeks that does seem a little bad). 2. My letter "e" is a bit tempremental and quite often requires a hard press to work properly. The Vista upgrade site is a pig - the 1st time through I selected "debit card", got to the end and found that my type was not listed and no way to go back and change it. Had to email them to delete my COA from their system. Today I tried several times and each time the site came up with "an uncorrectable error has occured, please try later"... not happy with the upgrade process at all. |

From: jonathanmusto | posted: 15.01.2007 08:46 I didn't get a redemption certificate or an XP CD... Pretty poor really.. I did manage to register for the upgrade though, following someones instructions on this thread, about page 18 I think... It cost me about £15 quid though, but its better that the full price... I'm just looking for the SATA drivers now incase i want to do a fresh install of my OS at some point... Anyone know where a can find these? Cheers, Jonathan. |
