From: Stuart Ladd | posted: 19.09.2001 20:24 Are all UK ISPs really disservice providers? I thought I had found a good ISP, when we were finally able to use Lineone on BT's surftime. After mere weeks of happiness, Lineone were sold to Tiscali. Since then the service has prett ymuch become a disservice -random disconnections, ultra-slow internet connection (when the carrier wave bit is actually successful) and certain services no longer work (e.g. downloading multiple partss of the same ile to increase speed). Also, I'm told that the news service has an 8 hour lag. However, there seems to be no alternative - bt? no way; AOL? don't insult me; compuserve? -should we really pay for the ability to simply dial a local number (thought that finished with the arrival of freeserve!)? Does anyone know of a decent article that reviews different ISPs? Helpfully, bt provides a long list of them, and you are forced to traul through it only to discover that your choice can only be based on how proffessional the site looks. Perhaps IT Reviews could do a comparitive review? |

From: Alex Cruickshank | posted: 26.09.2001 14:41 IT services aren't really our thing, but I agree - there are some shocking disparities between ISPs in the UK. I think Internet Magazine is a good source of comparative reviews of ISPs. Generally (as you'd expect) the 'free' ISPs are rarely as good as the paid-for ones. C'est la vie...
