But I doubt there would be room to squeeze in a Spectra, which has several layers of circuit board and a cooling fan on top. Just plugging a faster CPU in is unlikely to work either, as the voltage is likely to be different, although you could perhaps get an older 200MHz Pentium chip in there. Realistically, though, I reckon a new notebook is the only way forward. Alex |

From: CaptainMorgan | posted: 20.12.2006 22:05 I know this is a really old topic but I read it a day ago and decided to try just placing a better CPU into an AST Ascentia P series laptop. (have too many outdated computer parts and alot of time on my hands lol) I plugged in a pentium 233MMX from a old Packard Bell desktop in the place of the 133 that the P Series had. It works (runs windows 98 normally without locking up or shutting off or anything like that) but it reads it as a 133 still (probably due to board jumpers). Other than running a little bit hotter than the 133 it seems to work just as good with no performance advantage or disadvantage. As far as long term use or battery life I cannot say yet since I havent had time to test it that far. Then there's the board jumpers/switches.. I havent found any information about them for the P Series. (which was expected for such an ancient laptop) About the AMD Spectra.... I Unfortunatly do not have one of those to work with. The closest I have is a Mobile K62 400mhz from an old Compaq laptop. Is also unfortunate that I do not have a heatsink for the K62 that would fit in the P Series case. So to aviod wasting a perfectly good K6, I will work with the 233 MMX for now. being this is almost 6 years later I'm doing this more out of curiosity and just to see if it can be done. ***On a side note I have found that many of the components from Hitachi MX Series laptops and from Winbook FX will work with the P Series (they are nearly identical in the way they were built). Maybe information concerning either of those two laptops could help with this.*** I seriously doubt any of this would be helpful to anyone anymore but for the sake of general interest I post this. |
