From: Gary Weir | posted: 12.11.2001 11:50 Hi I have intruder alert program on my pc, recently i have had a lot of possible intruders trying to attack port 80. I have been told this is not a big problem but would like to no the real reason for this. The problem does not happen all the time, i can be on the net for hours and get no alerts then i get 10 alerts in the space of a minute. Cheers gary |

From: Alex Cruickshank | posted: 12.11.2001 17:05 HTTP port 80 is the Web server port, so something's looking to see if there's a Web site hosted on your machine. It could be a search engine spider or a hacker's automated port sniffer program. A firewall (see in our software utilities section for details, or search for 'firewall') is always a good idea to prevent any form of access to your machine. Alex Editor, IT Reviews |
