Good question. I suspect it goes something along the lines of...
1) Join the editorial team as a lowly assistant, making coffee, answering calls from angry readers (for some reason it's usually the angry ones who call) and generally hate the job.
2) Wait for everyone else to leave and then get yourself promoted by default.
