As a fashion designer, I am confused about the design software available. Is the software available for powermac the most appropriate or are there better alternatives for other pc's? In laymans terms please.

I can't help and I don't imagine many visitors to this site will be able to -- it's a specialised software field and I suspect that most visitors here are PC and not Mac users ('tho site editor Alex Cruickshank may correct me).
Head off to www.macuser.co.uk and search Reviews (button on the left hand side of the screen). You'll have to register for the site but this is okay -- I've done it without receiving a huge glut of spam.

You're right, and I won't. Nothing against Macs, but finding good (i.e. non-evangelical) journalists to review the kit is extremely tricky.
