I'm about to purchase my next comp and have approx. £1000-£1400 to spend. I 'd use the machine mainly for w.p., dtp, painting etc. - no gaming. I'm going to have a dvd/cd-rw and should like to have good dvd playback, although I don't think I'll be bothered about whole movies. I am baffled and confused about the number of graphics cards around and am not sure which one would be right for me. I suppose the choice of graphics card should go hand in hand with the processor type ? Should I go for Matrox or GeForce or anything else ? (I don't need dual head).

Well, if you don't need to play many games but want good DVD / 2D performance, I would reccomend the G400 or the ATI Rage fury Pro. Both are extremely fast in 2D graphics and the DVD playback is way better than others. Both will still function well in games (very well for most).
