From: Kingsley Mason | posted: 14.03.2001 13:56 I have a toshiba satellite laptop (P2 266Mhz)which is relatively slow, running Windows 98. I have done all the major software tweaks (I think!) and have the max memory installed (160MB RAM)but at the end of the day it is still slow! I am not a technical bloke but I know upgrade options in laptops are limited, so the major bottleneck is probably my hard drive (which must be a few years old now). Two questions: 1. Not worried so much about gigs of storage, but can anyone recommend a fast access 2 1/2 inch drive? 2. What is the best way to take a complete software copy of my existing drive and dump it straight onto the new drive? The current state of my system is very stable (for a change!) and I would hate to have to go back and re-install the lot plus updates.... Thanks for any help! |

From: Alex | posted: 15.03.2001 15:10 Not sure how much difference a hard drive would make in this case, but you could at least test it. Get a copy of PartitionMagic or some similar partitioning software, and DriveImage (see reviews of both products on this site). Using PartitionMagic you can shrink your existing partition and then temporarily install a clean copy of Windows 98, to see how quickly (or otherwise) it runs. If it's still dog slow, then a new hard drive might make the difference. If it's markedly quicker than yours, then some of the software you have installed is probably slowing your machine down. DriveImage will let you back up your partition to a remote drive (network, DVD-RAM, etc.) so that you can then easily restore it once you've installed a new drive. Alex |
