five Mr Men and a Little Miss (13/04/2007)
Well, there can't be any worries about value for money. For £14.99 you're getting six Mr Men titles, previously sold individually, and there's certainly a lot in there for your money. That said, bringing all six together does bring home that they're essentially made with the same tools, by the same people, and with roughly the same ideas. The exception is Mr Bump's Mad Run, but we'll come to that shortly.
The crux of Mr Nosey's Surprise Picnic, Mr Silly's Treasure Chest, The Adventures Of Mr Tickle, The Adventures Of Little Miss Scatterbrain and The Adventures Of Mr Greedy are primarily the same. A strange mosquito introduces some differing adventures, which play out thanks to extremely American voiceover artists who go through a decent, if hardly wonderfully engaging, script. The length of some of the exchanges led to our four-year-old test subject becoming bored a little too quickly, but jump to the mini-games that they lead to and things improve.
You can tackle the games via one of two difficulty levels and they revolve around simple puzzles, colours, sounds and suchlike, strung together by a straightforward narrative. It's hardly earth-shatteringly innovative, but it works, and while we found ourselves occasionally frustrated by the need to repeat things we'd already entered, on the whole each title worked at keeping our test subject entertained quite well. Again, it occasionally slightly misjudged the appropriate length for each activity, with a handful of mini-games outstaying their welcome, but that shouldn't put you off.
Mr Bump's Mad Run, the only title aimed at a higher age demographic (the rest are 4-8, this one is targeted at 6-10) is far less successful, though, courtesy of some irritating, basic and downright unfair mini-games. We'd expect it to be the least used of the titles here and certainly it's the most frustrating.
Each of the titles does suffer slightly from its American focus and there's little reason, given the amount of content on each disc, why all of these couldn't have been released in one go to start with. Also, in spite of the fact that one Mr Men or Little Miss character appears to have the starring role, each adventure - arguably in the spirit of the books - brings in many others from the same world. We'd wager this won't worry too many parents, but it's worth bearing in mind if your child has a favourite character.
There's nothing particular outstanding in this collection and nor is it anything more than a resolutely workmanlike use of the licence. But the content is quite good and, for the asking price, you're likely to get a good return from it.
Five solid titles, one duffer, but still good value for money.
