25 Abba songs in one karaoke pack (04/12/2008)
Believe some pundits and this is the game that's the dark horse for Christmas number one. With the Mamma Mia! movie breaking British box office records, Abbamania is arguably as intense as it's been in the last 20 years.
Now factor in Sony's ongoing karaoke juggernaut, Singstar. This is the fourth game in the franchise to hit the PlayStation 3 - it launches the same day as Volume 3, though, to be fair - and there's no unnecessary poking with the formula whatsoever, save for an instrumental version of Abba's Thank You For The Music warbling away in the background.
Only available as a solus release without microphones (Sony assumes you have some from a previous release, and those long-promised wireless mics are still nowhere to be seen), you quickly end up as usual at a familiar menu screen. From here you can head to the online Singstore, where further tracks are available for 99p apiece, or you can dive into one of the game modes. These cover single and multi-player, the latter including battles, duets (replete with harmonies, which are best tackled once the party is in full flow!) and pass-the-mic.

Set the difficulty level and you're off to the song choice, where the reason the Abba fan turned up quickly becomes apparent. There are 25 of the Swedish supergroup's tunes to pick from here, including high profile hits such as Dancing Queen and Waterloo, along with lesser-known fare such as The Day Before You Came and Head Over Heels. Each is accompanied by its respective video.
It's a suitably comprehensive round-up of Abba's greatest hits, and belting them out is as simple as following the words on screen and the visual pitch gauge. The more you hit the right notes, the higher your score will be. It's a fairly tepid experience in single player mode, but with friends on hand it actually works a treat.
This is, to be fair, a nice new direction for the Singstar series, as opposed to churning out compilation packs of jack-of-all-trade songs of which at most you'll like five or six. Clearly the target audience is very defined here, but what they can expect is another title off the Singstar production line, with some Abba-related customisations but not much else. For the fanatic, it's a no brainer. For the casual Abba enthusiast, it might be a wiser plan to cherry-pick the tracks you like on a one-by-one basis should they ever make it to the online Singstore.
It's exactly the same old Singstar but the model of a single-group release works well. Can we have Bowie next?
