Pocket PC phone with built-in TV tuner (10/10/2006)
The UBiQUiO 401 Pocket PC Phone is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device that is designed to look and behave like a slider Smartphone. This alone makes it rather different from other Windows Mobile devices, but there is more: a built-in FM radio and a TV tuner.
Compared to an ordinary slider phone the UBiQUiO 401 Pocket PC Phone is large and unwieldy. At 109mm tall, 53.5mm wide and 24mm thick it is almost shamefully big when sat next to more dainty slider phones. And at 153g it is heavy too.
It is also a little rotund when compared to other Windows Mobile Pocket PCs with telephony capability, and its screen, at 2.4 diagonal inches, is smaller than screens on Pocket PCs. It's closer to the size of screens on Smartphones, actually. So it is definitely a hybrid.
Sliding the top and bottom sections apart reveals a large number pad, but you don't need to use this often. Calls can be made and Windows Mobile applications used via the front-located Call and End keys, soft-menu buttons and responsive mini joystick.
The built in 2.1-megapixel camera can be accessed via a side button on the left edge and there is a jog wheel here too. You can, as always with Windows Mobile Pocket PC, also use the touch-sensitive screen (Windows Mobile Smartphone, on the other hand, doesn't support a touch-sensitive screen).
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both built in. With just about 15MB of free memory for your software and programs, you may want to buy a miniSD card to boost the memory. A covered slot for such a card is on the right-hand edge.
We've seen FM radios in phones plenty of times before, and the one here works perfectly well. You need to plug the provided headset in to use the radio as this contains the antenna. There are ten presets for radio stations, and - conveniently - you can record to the internal memory or a miniSD card.
In our tests the TV worked well too. It picks up analogue broadcasts and will auto-tune to them. We managed to get all five terrestrial channels for our area with no problems at all, and found watching TV OK in most cases: some broadcasts do need a bigger screen but most are fine. Again you need the headset connected for its integrated antenna.
A potentially useful feature is that the recording application you can use to save radio broadcasts can also be used to record phone calls and can be set up to act as an on-device answering machine. You can get it to answer calls after 10, 15 or 20 seconds of rings. Set it up to run before your network operator service does and you could save a lot of effort with voicemail.
The UBiQUiO 401 Pocket PC Phone is not the prettiest Windows Mobile device we've ever seen and it is a little chunky for the pocket. But it does have a few unique features and the TV tuner works surprisingly well.
