Bluetooth headphones for just about anything (20/03/2007)
Portable music has certainly come a long way since it consisted of lugging your boom-box around on your shoulder. The walkman was a revelation, although it was still a little bulky for jogging. Then the MP3 player came along, and these days you can have a gadget the size of a stick of gum playing your music on the move. The only hitch remaining is the headphone cord, which can still be irritating especially if you're running, but that's where wireless headphones come in.
The FreePulse Wireless consists of a set of headphones and a Bluetooth adapter, along with a mains charger that charges both simultaneously. You can plug the adapter into anything with a standard 3.5mm jack - your MP3 player, PC, stereo and so on - and it will deliver wireless sound to the headphones within a ten metre range, according to Logitech. A collection of small plastic panels that slot on top of the adapter are provided; these adjust it to ensure that it's a secure fit for any iPod model.
The headphones are rear-worn, meaning they sit behind your head rather than on top. Small plastic loops fit over the top of each ear to keep the phones securely in place. This feels fine initially, although we did find that after an hour or so it became somewhat uncomfortable on the ears.
A convenient volume control is provided, operated by pressing the top (to increase) or bottom (decrease) of one of the ear-pieces. In terms of quality, the sound delivered is actually very good. It's well rounded and quite meaty, particularly when you switch on the bass boost which gives the lower end a solid dose of pep. The volume is powerful enough to loosen the old ear-wax, too, if you crank it right up.
We tested the claimed ten metre range of the headphones by wandering around our house, and indeed this figure proved to be just about spot on. We could still receive the signal from the stereo in the kitchen at the front of the house, when we were stood at the patio door to the back garden, a distance of just under ten metres (if the estate agent wasn't lying to us, anyway). Closed doors, mind you, affected the range and meant we started getting sound drop-outs here and there.
The headphones and adapter are both well designed, aside from the aforementioned comfort issue. The wireless adapter isn't too bulky - it's approximately 4cm by 3cm, and 1.5cm thick - and it fits in your pocket without trouble, so won't turn your svelte MP3 player into a small brick when plugged into it. Both the adapter and phones are light yet sturdy and the build quality is commendable. Finally, the battery life is six hours on a full charge, a respectable amount of playing time.
These headphones boast good sound and build quality and they're very flexible. You can wander around your house plugging them into anything (except the cat), or indeed take them jogging and avoid having a stupid trailing cable flapping around and annoying you. They're impressively well designed except for one negative point; the comfort factor is questionable after wearing them for a while.
