tiny 6GB or 8GB USB flash drive (03/04/2007)
Perhaps the fastest moving technology when it comes to computers is capacity. Computer memory, hard drive space and most recently portable storage such as flash drives are constantly being refined and improved, and considering the increasing abundance of portable multimedia it's a good thing too.
A recent addition to the market comes in the form of Memorex's Mega Travel Drive, a miniature portable storage device available in 6GB or 8GB capacity. It has a stylish aluminium finish and houses a flip-out USB 2.0 plug, in an effective design that improves portability. You'll also find a leather carry pouch and a short USB adapter/extension lead in the box.
At about the size of two standard-sized USB drives side by side (albeit around twice as thick) it's pretty portable, in fact one of the smallest medium capacity solutions we've seen. With an emphasis on travelling this is the Mega Drive's main appeal: it's certainly pocket-sized and the supplied pouch, which comes with a belt clip if you're fond of strapping gadgets to your waist, makes it easy to keep on you at all times.
Predictably, getting it hooked up is as easy as plugging it straight into a spare USB port. After a short installation routine it'll pop up just like a regular hard drive for you to drag and drop contents across.
There's no security software pre-loaded on the device or any particular functionality other than the bare-bones minimum. With this in mind the main appeal from a consumer's point of view will be based on portability and price. At around £70 for the 6GB version and about £30 more for the 8GB drive, it's in line with similar capacity rivals without particularly offering great value for money.
In terms of size, as we've mentioned it's one of the smallest around, but you can pick up far larger capacities for around the same price if you're willing to sacrifice portability a little. ATMT, for example, offers a 20GB pocket drive for under £90 at the time of writing. Although obviously quite a bit larger physically, it's still slim and pocketable.
Judgement over a medium-sized storage solution like the Mega Travel Drive depends on how much you're willing to pay for something this portable. As it stands it's a perfectly capable, solid looking and well designed flash drive that doesn't offer anything particularly new to the market but is a well thought out solution nonetheless.
If you're in the market for a decent portable storage drive there are dozens to choose from at different sizes and different capacities. Memorex's Mega Travel Drive is a small and functional enough solution that should appeal if portability is your main concern.
