Windows Mobile quad-band PDA with GPS (03/12/2007)
When it comes to choosing a PDA phone you often have to make a compromise somewhere along the way. This is especially the case if you want all the latest features. If you are looking for a mini keyboard plus GPS and Wi-Fi, then your choices are limited, to say the least.
One model that meets all these demands is E-TEN's quad-band Glofiish M700. The mini keyboard slides out of one long edge, as is the norm for keyboard-equipped Windows Mobile Pocket PCs. Tapping away with both thumbs produces a reasonable show of speed. While obviously not as fast as using a proper keyboard, it is a lot faster than tapping away at a soft-keyboard.
The GPS antenna means you can use navigation software built for the Windows Mobile operating system. The Glofiish M700 runs Windows Mobile 5.0 rather than the newer Windows Mobile 6, and this is one of its few drawbacks. Though actually, while the differences between the two are many, the older version should work perfectly well for many users.
Even without any navigation software you can use a pre-installed application called Location SMS. This sends a text message which incorporates your latitude and longitude to the recipient of your choice. There are some pre-defined texts to get you started, but frankly you'll need to take a long, hard look at them as they are full of spelling and syntactical errors.
There is also an FM radio built in. These are pretty rare in Windows Mobile devices, which makes the presence here something of a treat. Better still is that you can use the radio without having the provided headset attached. Mobile phones and those few PDAs with FM radios tend to have the antenna built into the provided headset, but here it is built into the main body of the device. It is a shame about the 2.5mm headset jack, but a converter to 3.5mm allows you to use any headset you like.
Of course there is a camera, though its 2-megapixel capability marks it out as firmly mid-range. That noted, it is fine for shooting photo contacts or images to store on the device or MMS to others: just not much cop for holiday snaps or other photos you really want to keep.
E-TEN tends to bulk its PDAs out with applications and the Glofiish M700 is no exception. Among the list of pre-installed apps are plug-ins for the Today screen, a special speed-dial application for the phone, call filtering and block lists, a backup utility and a few applications for managing and editing images.
While held back by some of its specifications, the Glofiish M700 is a good all-rounder, and the built-in GPS antenna means it can double as a sat-nav device if you buy some third party navigation software.
