budget LCD installation projector (25/01/2008)
The Viewsonic PJ758 is a hefty projector that is intended to be used in a fixed installation such as a meeting room. That's not to say that you can't lug the PJ758 from one meeting room to another, but it weighs in at a substantial 3.5kg and measures 340 x 100 x 270mm, so you probably wouldn't want to carry it too far.
On a positive note, the physical size of the projector has given Viewsonic plenty of space to fit a decent selection of ports and connectors. There are Component, Composite, S-Video and dual VGA inputs plus a VGA output. In addition to those video connections there are dual mini jack audio inputs, stereo RCA inputs and an audio mini jack output.
That's a lot of ports, but you'll note there's no sign of a DVI or HDMI connection, so we're talking about an array of relatively old technology and we have to wonder how useful many of those connectors will be in practice. After all, most of us connect a laptop to a projector with VGA or DVI, and you might connect a DVD player or games console with the Component inputs, but we suspect that many of those inputs and outputs will remain unused.
You'd be well advised to give the integrated mono speaker a whirl as it is rated at 6W which is far more beefy than the usual 1W speaker you find in most projectors.
This LCD projector has an XGA resolution of 1,024 x 768 and the 500:1 contrast ratio is pretty much what you'd expect from an LCD. Similarly the brightness rating of 2,200 lumens is perfectly OK for a relatively cheap projector.
Generally speaking you can expect that a large projector will be relatively quiet, as the manufacturer can use the bulk of the casing to reduce the level of radiated noise, but the Viewsonic PJ758 isn't particularly quiet. In Normal mode it has a rating of 34dB which is a touch on the loud side, but switching to Eco mode reduces it to 29dB which is far more acceptable.
Setting up the projector is a reasonably quick process thanks to the automatic keystone adjustment but we weren't too impressed by the feel of the navigation pad that is located on the top of the projector. It works well enough but feels a bit cheap and basic, and added to that the zoom and focus controls are tucked away inside an opening in the top of the casing.
The good news is that image quality is very fair. The picture isn't as pin-sharp or bright as you might like but, considering the price, Viewsonic has done a reasonable job. However, there's no avoiding the fact that the PJ758 is big and heavy and that is bound to dissuade some potential customers.
This triple-LCD projector has an average specification and delivers an average picture that fails to set the world alight. The large size and high weight rule out potential customers who want a portable projector. The price is good, but balanced against that the PJ758 doesn't have any killer features that will grab the attention of the business user who is looking for an installed projector.
