PDA with sliding keyboard, GPS and more (25/09/2008)
E-TEN is getting quite a name for itself as a supplier of Windows Mobile handhelds with high end specifications. The M810 is no exception, bundling as it does a huge array of features including plenty of software add-ons and a built-in sliding keyboard.
It doesn't come cheap SIM-free, but for your money you get an HSDPA device with support for video calling, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, GPS and an FM radio at its core.
Physically the Glofiish M810 looks distinctive. Its rounded corners and almost enamelled sheen are attractive. Its 2.8-inch screen occupies most of the front fascia with only two softkey buttons, Call and End keys and a D-Pad sitting below it.
The sliding keyboard pops out of the left long edge. It makes the device a little large and heavy at 179g, 109.5mm tall, 59mm wide and 17.5mm thick, but the keyboard should allow you to work on mobile e-mail and type out text at speed.

In fact the keyboard isn't as useful as it could be. It is comprised not of individual keys but of a flat membrane with key areas marked out by blue frames. Tapping is little slower than it is on a physical keyboard simply because of the lack of tactile feedback, and for preference we would not choose it.
The pre-installed software goodies include a scanner for business cards. This uses the 2-megapixel main camera to photograph cards, then some software to turn their contents into an entry in the contacts database. It wasn't perfect on test but did give us a head start on tapping in the entire contact details from scratch.
There is also a utility for sending your latitude and longitude as part of an SMS message. This could be handy in an emergency, or just if you want to meet up with someone who has a device which can route you to a position identified in this way. There is no point-to-point navigation, but this can be added via third party software.
There is nothing especially novel or groundbreaking about this handheld. It packs no huge surprises and is somewhat let down by its flat keyboard. But on the other hand it does offer pretty much everything that a current top of the range Windows Mobile device should, with battery life tipped at up to 6 hours of talk, 5 hours of GPS usage.
If you are looking for a Windows Mobile device with everything, the M810 could fit the bill. Just be sure you can live with the flat keyboard.
