fast, AMD-based business PC (07/02/2001)
Null points for the name, which is as cheesy as they come, and conjures up images of 1980s arcade games. But this system from Best Price has a lot going for it; don't judge a PC by its title...
Let's chug through the spec first. This system's tower case conceals a 1GHz AMD Athlon chip, along with 128MB of memory in the shape of a single DIMM stick, so you can easily upgrade it if you feel the need. These components are located in an Asus ATX motherboard that has a whole host of tweaking options available. Best Price seems to have made the most of these, too, since the performance of the machine as a whole - and the hard drive sub-system in particular - is highly impressive.
That performance is at least partly helped by the graphics card - a 32MB GeForce 2 MX AGP card. This may be the 'cut-down' version of nVidia's chip design, but it's still stonkingly quick, giving this business machine a bit of a lunchtime gamer's edge. Just in case you get carried away, though, the business aspect is reinforced by the choice of operating system pre-installed; Windows 2000 Professional. You also get the Professional version of Office 2000, plus various utilities and other tools.
These applications are stored on the 30GB IBM hard drive, which runs off the main IDE controller on the motherboard. The secondary IDE channel, meanwhile, is connected to what is fast becoming an essential piece of office hardware; the CD-RW drive. This particular drive can handle 8-speed write, 4-speed re-write and 32-speed read operations. There's no DVD drive, but that's not much of a handicap for a business PC.
You probably don't need a decent sound card in a business system, either, but you get one anyway; Creative's SoundBlaster PCI 128, along with a couple of uninspiring speakers. What's arguably more useful is the 56Kbps internal PCI modem, along with the 10/100Mbps PCI network adapter.
The icing on this silicon cake is the 19-inch monitor. This is from Iiyama, the company that dominated the 17-inch CRT market for much of the late 1990s. This particular model is the S900, and it has good clarity and contrast, with well balanced colours.
This is a good system. The components are well matched, it's fast and solidly put together, and the majority of features are well geared towards the business power user. It's just a shame about that name.
