DAB and FM radio with pause and rewind feature (05/03/2009)
DAB isn't everyone's cup of tea, and take-up in the UK is hardly something to crow about. But if you are into digital radio then you need a quality set to make the most of it. Pure's EVOKE-2S wants to be that set.
It certainly has a lot going for it. Sound quality is good thanks to the Clearsound digital subsystem. Along with separate tweeters, Class D amplifiers, digital audio shaping technology and a claimed 30 watts of output this is all the radio you are likely to need for general listening. We found sound quality to be good for music and spoken word providing you don't crank the volume up to its maximum, at which point things can go a bit awry.
One feature we found quite impressive is ReVu. You use this to pause and rewind live DAB radio. There is a button on the front control panel: hit it and radio pauses. Hit it again and playback resumes. Now imagine you are listening to a play on Radio 4 and the phone rings. Pause it, take the call and go right back. If you want to backtrack a few words to remind yourself where you left off, just roll the tuner button anti-clockwise while playback is paused and hit the ReVu button again to start things off.

There is, of course, an alarm. It is nicely configurable, offering alarms every day, every weekday, weekends, Saturdays, Sundays or once only. There is also a sleep timer which turns the radio off after a set time, and, most usefully, a kitchen timer. This is basically a countdown timer whose interval you set. It could be useful for a whole lot more than boiling an egg.
With 50 DAB and 50 FM presets you should never be hunting for stations by twiddling the tuner knob. The OLED display is clear and bright in all lighting conditions and from all angles.
If we have a design criticism it is that the headset jack is on the back of the radio where it can be a little fiddly to get at. The back also has aux in and line out jacks, and a mini-USB connector for administering software upgrades, though there's no option for playback of media stored on USB flash drives or hard drives.
The PURE EVOKE-2S is mains powered by default, though you can splash out on a battery pack which will give it more than 20 hours of playback away from mains power. PURE really should simply bundle this, in our view. You can turn mains power off via a back-mounted switch, which is ideal for those of us who feel standby is not particularly eco-friendly.
This is a nicely built DAB radio made with PURE's usual attention to detail. Sound quality is good as long as you don't crank it up too far, and the ReVu mode is a feature we'd like to see in all DAB radios.
