ultra wide band wireless data sharing device (02/07/2009)
Sometimes we come across a device that deserves to succeed but that we don't think can. The Leyio is an example.
The Leyio is a small mass storage device that you carry in your pocket. It has a tiny (1.5-inch) screen and a fingerprint sensor that doubles up as a navigation pad on the front.
Connect it to your PC, populate its 16GB of memory with files and then, when you meet someone with another Leyio and want to share files, make a temporary bond and flick your device at theirs. The files are transferred wirelessly and the flicking system worked perfectly every time we tried it. The Leyio uses ultra wide band radio for data transfer, making it very fast. The throughput is 10MBps.
There are other ways of transferring data using this device. There is a miniUSB port and you can use this to connect the Leyio to a PC and use it as an external drive. It has a full sized USB slot, too, so you can connect any USB key drive and do two-way file transfer.

And if you don't have a USB key drive to hand you can use the rather clever ‘satellite' drive. This is essentially a small USB device with 2GB of memory that is integrated into the Leyio's shell, rather like some car keys have a small spare lurking inside their frame.
You can copy a file to the ‘satellite' from the Leyio and then plug the ‘satellite' into any USB port on a PC to get the file across. Cleverly, when you return the ‘satellite' to its home inside the Leyio, the files on it are automatically deleted so it is clean ready for its next use.
But there are a couple of significant problems. Ultra wide band isn't used by other devices so Leyios can only talk wirelessly to each other. The suggested price of the Leyio is £159. We found it online for £125 when writing this review, but that is still a pretty penny to pay for what is basically a file sharing device.
You can see where this is leading.
You could spend your £100 plus and end up with a clever device that you just can't use because it has no equivalent to talk to. OK, you can connect it directly to a PC, it can be used with USB sticks and you can use the ‘satellite' device. But those methods really turn the Leyio into a glorified 16GB storage device. We've already got one of those on our keyring and it cost a lot less than £125.
We like ultra wide band radio because of its absolute speed of data transfer. We like the Leyio because it is small and portable and easy to use. And we like that it has alternatives to the ultra wide band data transfer option. But it is expensive. And it needs another Leyio to really show off what it can do.
