small format Windows Mobile phone with confusing user interface (09/03/2010)
If you want a Windows Mobile toting handset with a full frontal touchscreen but would like something a bit small and fancy a skinned version of Windows Mobile, then LG's GM750 might appeal. Its relatively pocket friendly dimensions of 109.8 x 56.5 x 11.9mm x 122g mean that the screen is not as large as some. But at 3-inches and with 400 x 240 pixels, it should be fine unless you are very keen on mobile media viewing or need a large display for mobile Web browsing.
However, the way Windows Mobile 6.5 is integrated into the LG GM750 is more than a little confusing. The S-Class user interface that LG uses on many of its handsets is skinned on top of Windows Mobile. This does make things a little tricky as there are apps that double up what Windows Mobile offers. So, for example, the S-Class user interface offers a calendar and contacts app, email software, messaging utility and music player... as does Windows Mobile.

There is also a five-screen system which is part of S-Class. One of these screens is dedicated to contacts, another to music and photos, the third to connected services, and one is left blank for any widgets you choose to place on it. The fifth is the main home screen and gives the usual information such as notifications for missed calls and diary alerts.
The Windows Mobile Start button gets you into Windows Mobile applications themselves should you prefer them. These often benefit from the use of a stylus on the resistive screen, but LG does not provide one that slides into the chassis. Instead you get a telescopic stylus that dangles from the phone on a small lanyard. The whole array is likely to be a little confusing for anyone not familiar with the smartphone ethos.
The microUSB port on the top edge of the handset doubles up for attaching the headset. LG's provided headset is two-piece with a 3.5mm connector just past the microphone so you can use your own earphones easily. Beneath the screen is an optical joystick where you'd normally expect to find a D-pad. It's quite responsive to finger sweeps, but for everyday use we prefer a D-pad. A button on the right side of the casing opens a multitasking window that lets you switch to or close opened applications.
When it comes to specifications there is plenty going on here. HSDPA is supported with a top download speed of 7.2Mbps, and there is Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth. GPS is also present so you can do point-to-point navigation if you add in some software. There is a microSD card slot for augmenting the built-in storage, located on the right side of the casing. The 5-megapixel camera shoots reasonable pictures but lacks a flash, and there is a front camera for two-way video calling.
In spite of some impressive specifications, we think the dual interface system combining LG's S-Class with Windows Mobile and doubling up on some applications is just too complicated for many users.
