high-end 20-inch LCD monitor (06/01/2004)
The flat screen revolution rolls on and on, with both televisions and computer monitors rapidly and loudly trumpeting the virtues of going from bulky and heavy CRT screens to the new, slim-line displays. All well and good, of course, so long as the picture resolution and quality can seriously outclass the dinosaurs they're replacing, and maybe throw in a few other tricks as well.
This is where NEC-Mitsubishi is pitching its latest MultiSync offspring, aiming at the serious high-end users who want only the best to display their games-playing prowess, business presentations, graphic arts skills or desktop publishing abilities.
Specifications begin with a 20.1-inch diagonal screen that is designed for a maximum resolution of 1,600 by 1,200 pixels. The stylish stand has a deceptively smooth action to allow for easy height adjustment, tilting and swivelling; alternatively you can dispense with the stand and go for wall-mounting instead.
Setting up the monitor is straightforward; plug in the power and signal connectors and switch on. In digital mode, everything is then automatically controlled, although it can be manually tweaked if you so desire. The 'OmniColor' settings combine six-axis colour control (rather than the usual three) and the sRGB standard, while the on-screen menu lets you quickly and accurately adjust all elements of the screen image.

The display comes complete with 'ambix' technology that allows both digital and analogue inputs off one connector (DVI-I), or you can opt for pure analogue with a traditional 15-pin D-Sub VGA connector.
Other goodies in the package include Intelligent Power Manager System (moving to lower power consumption when not in use), Multiple Frequency Technology (automatically adjusting to the display card's scanning frequency), CableComp (preventing image quality degenerating with long cable runs) and Wide Viewing Angle Technology, which lets you watch the monitor from almost any angle, whether in landscape or portrait. No-Touch Auto Adjust will seek out optimal settings when in analogue mode.
The remaining gem in the bundle is 'NaViSet', which allows you to remotely access, diagnose and then alter the settings of other monitors on your network, thus bringing them all into line. Automatic black level adjustment also comes as standard, although when switched to manual it could prove useful for medical practitioners who want to examine X-rays closely, for example.
Gamers are not neglected, as the Rapid Response facility provides for life-like, full-motion video display with response times of 30ms or less. In other words, you get full video while virtually eliminating ghosting or blurring, running at a minimum of 33 frames per second. More than adequate to indulge yourself in the latest 3D action games.
If money is burning a hole in your pocket and you want to aim at the top end of the computer monitor spectrum, then the LCD2080UX+ not only looks good and delivers pin-sharp resolution, but is designed to be easy to set up and lets you manage multiple monitors across a network.
