a Media Center PC built into a 32-inch LCD TV (08/06/2005)
All-in-One PCs have been around for while, but while the ideal is sound enough the execution has more often than not been a let-down, and none (with the exception of Apple's iMac) ever seems to have that 'wow' factor. That is, until now. With the Lumina, Elonex has produced a stunning all-in-one which won't look out of place in any living room, and it has the 'wow' factor a-plenty.
What makes it so special is what the PC part is built into; nothing less than a 32-inch, high quality LCD TV. With a 16:9 aspect ratio this is ideal for watching DVDs, and is HDTV compliant. It is also wall-mountable (an additional £50 + VAT buys the VESA kit). Add to this a native resolution of 1,344 pixels by 768 pixels and what you have is a near-perfect screen for either media watching or standard home-office work, all from the comfort of your favourite sofa.
The PC itself is powered by a 3GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU, backed by 512MB of PC3200 (DDR400) memory, so it's no slouch in the performance stakes even with the older i865G chipset it uses.
Storage is provided by a 200GB hard drive, but if you feel this isn't sufficient for all your media recording needs, the Lumina can be ordered with either a 300GB or 400GB drive instead. The right hand side of the Lumina houses a slot-loading, dual-format DVD burner which will burn DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW, plus an 8-in-1 flash memory card reader.
A 128MB ATI Radeon 9600 AGP card powers the graphics side of things, and while this card is a bit long in the tooth to play the most modern games at high resolutions (18fps in Doom 3 at 1,024 x 768 resolution) it is perfect for a media PC.
The only real disappointment is the integrated 10W speakers but you're not likely to use these anyway. There are audio outputs, including optical audio, so connecting up to a better quality external speaker system presents few problems.
As standard the Lumina comes with a dual analogue TV Tuner card, but there is a single digital FreeView TV tuner card option available. Having dual tuners is a great move as Windows Media Center 2005 (the supplied operating system) comes with dual tuner support, so you can watch one channel while recording another, but the Lumina has another trick up its sleeve. It's an LCD TV, so in reality you have three tuners: you can record two channels via the TV card while watching the third which is built into the TV.
Connectivity is another of the Lumina's strong points; aside from a 56Kbps integrated modem it also has integrated 10/100Mbps Ethernet and 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, plus you get five USB 2.0 ports and a single FireWire port.
Rounding out the package is a wireless keyboard with integrated joystick/mouse controller and two remote controls; one for the screen and the other for the Media Center software.
Elonex should be congratulated on producing the Lumina. Not only is it the first all-in-one for ages to deserve serious attention, it's also one of the best media PCs currently available and at a price not hugely higher than a standard 32-inch LCD television.
