PDA with GPS for satellite navigation and route-finding (15/08/2005)
Acer's Pocket Chauffeur package is a product of two parts. First, there's the firm's n35 Pocket PC PDA, a mid-range palmtop with a few tricks up its sleeve. This has been paired with the increasingly popular Destinator GPS software package, with the end result billed as a GPS solution at a price that's a fair way south of dedicated SatNav kit.
So let's take each part in turn. The n35's main trick is that it has a GPS receiver built onto the unit. Actually, that's not quite true. It's pretty much its only trick, for aside from that it's a PDA that plays things straight down the line.
Its specifications are middle of the road (266MHz Samsung processor, 32MB flash memory and an LCD screen with a resolution of 240 x 320), and there's little to shout about when you consider the adequate casing and control mechanisms. It's a bright enough unit in use, lacking out of the box wi-fi support but otherwise making for a functional PDA. Replete with Pocket versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and Media Player, it's a fairly rounded package, but it'd be remiss of us not to point out that you can get better PDAs within the price range.

The Destinator software again is not the market leader, but it's still got a fair bit going for it. After taking some time in the majority of our tests to acquire the necessary satellite signals and get up and running, we then installed it in a car - where the PDA is held in place by the decent enough supplied holder - and set off on our travels.
We tested a few routes, and these were easily input (via the provided stylus) by telling the software the street and postcode we were hunting for. This is something you need to do before driving, though, as there's no way you could realistically adjust the device while on the move. Options are available for different map types and directions are clearly given in advance for which direction you need to take.
The software didn't always pick the obvious route from A to B, but it did find the odd time-saving trail while we were testing it. Our main grumble was that it didn't always give directions exactly when we needed them, but we can't fault its path-finding capabilities.

Overall, there's nothing hugely essential about this package. Neither the PDA nor the software are the best in their fields, and the time it takes to get going with the route finding was quite frustrating for us. But nonetheless the Pocket Chauffeur pack is competent, quite well priced and will no doubt please users who have never tried any other SatNav device in the past.
