printer with built-in CD burner (21/12/2005)
We've had photo printers, photo printers that don't need a PC, and now, thanks to Lexmark, we have a photo printer which not only doesn't need a PC, it also has a built-in CD burner.
The P450 is a compact (15.3 x 27.6 x 23.5cm), single-cartridge, 4,800 x 1,200dpi resolution, three colour (cyan, magenta and yellow) inkjet printer that allows you to print from a number of media types, as well as giving you the option to archive images direct to a CD.
A true standalone device, the P450 is a one-stop-shop for all your digital images, allowing you to view, print, edit, save, organise or share your photos. You can print photos from a USB drive (but only those in JPEG format), direct from the camera or from a memory card.
Lexmark even provides a video port on the back of the unit, enabling photo slide-shows to be shown on a TV. There is a Bluetooth adapter available which plugs into the USB port so that you can print from a mobile phone.
A flip-up, 2.4-inch colour LCD screen lets you view and edit your images. Editing features allow you to crop, rotate, fix colours and remove red-eye, along with a selection of effects including sepia and antique grey. The LCD panel, when down, also hides the control panel with its six buttons.
At the rear of the printer is the paper feed which holds up to 25 sheets of 6 x 4-inch photo paper, and you have the option to print full page, bordered or contact sheets.
Lexmark supplies a number 33 cartridge (£16.16 inc. VAT) with the printer, which is good for about 70 prints. The optional number 35 high-yield cartridge (£21.38 inc. VAT) can print about 140 photos. In the near future, Lexmark is likely to offer a Photo Printing Pack for the P450, as it did with the P315, comprising a high-yield number 35 cartridge and 140 blank 6 x 4-inch sheets.
But it's not all good news. Unfortunately the printer has an annoying habit of setting itself up every time you use it, not just after changing cartridges. It is also slow to print and to burn images onto the CD: 25 minutes to burn 100 images in our test. The print quality isn't too good either, mainly due to the use of just three colours and the native print resolution.
Lexmark provides a one-year warranty with the P450.
Despite its shortcomings in terms of print speed and burn times to CD, the P450 is a versatile standalone printer and hopefully, if Lexmark keeps faith with the concept, print quality, print speed and burn speed should improve in future models.
