(Logitech, Microsoft, Trust)
Introduction
Logitech - Cordless Desktop MX3000 Laser
Microsoft - Wireless Optical Desktop 5000
Trust - Wireless Laser Deskset DS-4500X
Verdict
comfortable and feature-rich keyboard and mouse combination (11/01/2006)
Logitech's excellent entry into this round-up resolutely spells 'laser' with the letter 's'. Hurrah. It's also the most expensive of the three kits on test here, although it simply drips with quality.
That said, we didn't immediately warm to the keyboard. The travel on the keys of the Logitech unit feels a little reduced, and the board itself has a softer all-round feel than the Microsoft keyboard. But nonetheless we endured, and after a solid week found it had been exceptionally comfortable to use, and that our initial fears had been comfortably allayed.
There's a fair bit in its armoury, too. This has the broader and more interesting range of additional keys of the three. In the top right, for instance, you can jump straight to the Windows calculator, or call up the likes of Messenger, e-mail or a Web-cam. At the top are the media functions, complete with a rotating volume knob and even buttons to work through your playlists or shuffle the playing order of your tunes.

On the left side is the zoom function, not perhaps in quite as fancy a way as Microsoft implements it, but Logitech scores bonus points for the '100 percent' button that immediately knocks a digital picture up (or down) to full size. There's a small scroll wheel in there too. Phew. Logitech's software tools are also easy enough to use and thus it's possible to customise the keys to your liking.
The mouse is our favoured out of the three. Much is made of the laser precision on the packaging, although truthfully we picked up at best a marginal difference, even in the midst of a frantic Call Of Duty 2 campaign. It's blatantly suited to right-handers, but if you fall into that camp, the ergonomics delivered are the most comfortable of the three units. In terms of functionality, its scroll wheel goes both ways, and there are four buttons on the side which come with pre-programmed functions that are easily modifiable.
From start to finish with this package, you feel like you're getting a premium mouse and keyboard set, and Logitech very clearly delivers. The price tag isn't going to suit everyone, of course, and the keyboard wasn't our favourite (although there's very little between our favoured two). But given its ease to set up, the comfort we experienced when using both the keyboard and mouse and the broad functionality of both - that eclipses both Microsoft and Trust - it's hard not to be impressed.
This is a very strong package from a company that really know its stuff. A bit pricey, perhaps, but it's a set that really delivers.
