Sony revealed new head-tracking technology for the PlayStation 3 at the recent Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
Most impressively, this system doesn't require the player to strap any devices to his or her head; it works purely with the PlayStation Eye camera, tracking movements simply by locking on to the user's facial features.
The applications of head-tracking in gaming are obvious. Not only will you be able to finger your fretboard along to the Guitar Hero style games of the future, but you'll also be able to head-bang, with points given for rhythm and style. Maybe. Or perhaps, more seriously, immersion in first-person shooters will be considerably heightened with the ability to physically lean and peek around corners.
Sony isn't talking about which games are going to incorporate the technology yet, but we'd imagine that up and coming big name shooters will clearly be candidates.
