fun, educational, BBC-related software for children (23/05/2006)
The GSP label is currently bustling with licensed titles from the BBC. That means its range features several pieces of software that boast characters from TV shows that pint-size computer users are, in principle, going to love. So we've rounded up a trio of them here to see if they're actually much cop.
The first is Bananas In Pyjamas: It's Party Time (£4.99). Aimed at two to six year olds, it was slightly beyond the comprehension of our two year old tester, although he was suitably amused by the animations and songs. The product itself is a series of small, bite-sized activities at the hands of the fruity pair and their chums, and it's backed up by a bonus add-on that lets you print your pictures and invitations adorned by the title characters.
It's actually not a bad little pack, either, although it does show its age. Developed over six years ago, the signs of late 1990s computer usage are there, a relatively small viewing window and an installation of a dated version of Quicktime being the primary clues. But there's quite a lot to enjoy and, while hardly cutting edge, it's still good value.
Balamory (£9.99) is better, though. Kicking off with a full screen rendition of the television show's intro and catchy theme music - and that set our infant tester off into song quickly enough - this one invites you to tackle various and varied activities with the Balamory residents.
Everything is clearly explained, and the mix of video clips, little educational games (focusing on spelling, numbers and suchlike) and painting tools is very welcome. We ran out of things to do a little sooner than we'd have liked, but that was as much testament to the fact that our young tester was keen to keep going.
Finally, there's Bill & Ben Flowerpot Fun (£4.99). Even the oldies are likely to know this lot, and as with Bananas In Pyjamas, the software itself has knocked up a few years too. We weren't impressed at all that the program expected us to manual reset our display from 32-bit to 16 or 24-bit (if this is really necessary, then the software should do it), and sadly this was the first clue that this is a horribly dated package. That means the video clips are pixelated and the activities themselves are lacking a bit of spit and polish too. For a fiver you'll get some value from Bill & Ben, but this is easily the weakest of the trio we have on test here.
On the whole, each of the titles here does have educational and entertainment value, although it's fair to say that none fulfils the hopes you might have, considering the licence involved. If you had to plump for one, then £9.99 spent on Balamory is your best bet.
At best quite good, at worst very old. None is quite as strong as the packaging would suggest, but each will satiate the needs of their target audience, for at least a little while.
